Good Food, Mad City – August Food Events in Charlotte

As summer comes to an end, rejoice with local chefs and restaurants at barbeques, festivals and block parties around the city and the state. Beer lovers luck out with an abundance of events showcasing resident breweries with plenty of beer pairing dinners and events for IPA Day, celebrated in August. There are two events that are benefiting nonprofit organizations that are noteworthy. The 2nd Annual Friends and Beerfest at Legion Brewing will donate proceeds to Cerebral Palsy research and Chef’s Best will raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank. Revel in the last of the summer sunshine at one of these fun local events below.

Smoke, Spirits and BBQ

August 2 at The Asbury – $65

Lucky for Charlotte food lovers, Smoke, Spirits and BBQ will be the first of two collaborative dinners this month at The Asbury in the historic Dunhill Hotel. This gourmet, four course meal will consist of pairings of smoked meats, spirits and Southern sides for $65 per person. The menu boasts classic barbeque with a contemporary twist such as charred pork belly with a bourbon gastrique and oak smoked ribs with slow roasted peach BBQ accompanied by pickled white peaches and pea shoots. The meal will end with a sinful dessert: cast iron peach cobbler topped with peanut and thyme streusel and bacon ice cream. Chef Matthew Krenz will be partnering with Dan Doyle, executive chef and managing partner of Poogan’s Porch and Poogan’s Smokehouse in Charleston, SC. With Doyle’s passion for low country fare and both chefs’ expertise on smoked meats, this barbeque is sure to be one for the books. Don’t forget to make a reservation by calling the restaurant or booking on Open Table beforehand because The Asbury’s collaborative dinners are known to sell out.

IPA Day 2017

August 3 at Sycamore Brewing – $3/pint

If you like your craft beer packed with hops and flavor, then IPA Day is for you. On August 3, head to Sycamore Brewing in South End to celebrate IPA Day 2017 from 4:00-11:00 PM. There will be six different IPAs on tap, each for only $3 a pint and the first 280+ people will receive a free IPA Day pint glass. To accompany the cold brews, Papi Queso will be serving up their famous gooey grilled cheeses including the Pig Mac: BBQ pork shoulder, mac and cheese and bourbon onions served on two slices of toasted, fresh, French Pullman Bread. Fish Out of Water from San Diego, California will provide live music and entertainment with their rock, funk, reggae, and hip-hop vibes.

2nd Annual Friends and Beerfest: IPA Edition

August 5 at Legion Brewing – $15 advance $20 at door

Legion Brewing will be hosting another event to celebrate the hoppy and unique flavor of India pale ales. With over 25 local breweries to choose from, the 2nd Annual Friends and Beerfest will have an IPA for everyone (21+ that is). Some local brewers include Cabarrus Brewing Company, High Branch Brewing Company, Wooden Robot Brewery, Unknown Brewing Co., Birdsong Brewing Co., Heist Brewery, Lenny Boy Brewing Co., Rock Bottom Brewery, Sugar Creek Brewing Co., Cavendish Brewing Co., Three Spirits Brewery, and more. The price of one ticket includes a sample card which is good for five 4 oz. samples, a commemorative taster glass, live music by The Goodnight Brothers and The Bloodworth Project and fresh food from local businesses, Roots Catering and Two Scoops Creamery. Additional sample cards can be purchased at the festival for $10 per card. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, so you can drink beer while helping a good cause. The foundation supports cutting edge research to accelerate discoveries around the prevention, treatment and cure of Cerebral Palsy. Order/fire Summer Party

August 7 at Free Range Brewing Company – Free admission

Order/fire is back with their summer party where the show will be announcing Season 3 dates, guests and their new look for the season. Order/fire and Free Range Brewing Company will be debuting their beer collaboration featuring local plums and Chef Marc Jacksina will be grilling up wings to accompany the new brew. This free event will be a great way to end the summer and kick-off Season 3 of the Charlotte-based video series.

Shake, Stir, Sip, Socialize Cocktail Class: The Italian Aperitivo Part I and II

August 10 and August 24 at Luca Modern Italian Kitchen – $65

Join wine expert Jessica Annunziata, co-owner of Luca Modern Italian Kitchen, for a hands-on cocktail class where you will learn all about Italian spirits. Participants will learn to craft cocktails from many indispensable Italian liquors such as Sweet Vermouth, Prosecco, Limoncello and Grappa. Jessica boasts 24 years behind the bar and studied Epicureanism and spirits in Italy during the Annunziata’s time living abroad in Luca’s hometown in the Campania region of Italy. Your ticket includes step by step instructions on making three unique and full size cocktails, simple syrup demonstrations and gourmet small bites paired with each drink by Chef Luca Annunziata.

First Montford Open

August 11-12 on Montford Drive – $5

In celebration of the PGA Championship taking place in Charlotte, Montford drive will be hosting the First Montford Open on August 11-12. Angry Ale’s, Brazwell’s and Southside are partnering for a weekend full of food and drink specials, mini golf tournaments and live music. For $5, participants will receive Angry Ale’s Big A$$ Cup and be entered to win some great prizes as they compete at holes at each Montford restaurant. Start practicing your swing for this block party and bring your competitive side!

Love Desserts Festival

August 12 at Sugar Creek Brewing – $10

The inaugural Love Desserts Festival will be hosting some of Charlotte’s best pastry chefs and bakeries at Sugar Creek Brewing on August 12. Attendees will enjoy delicious fun including a life-size pool of desserts, samples of sweet treats from select vendors, and contests for both vendors and participants. Some of Charlotte’s tastiest and most creative desserts will be available for sampling and for sale including King of Pops, Ninety’s Ice Cream and Gigi’s Cupcakes. Support local bakeries and restaurants while also satisfying your sweet tooth.

Nourish Plant-Based Mexican Cuisine Cooking Class

August 16 at Nourish – $55

Vegan or not, everyone will enjoy this cooking class filled with mouthwatering Mexican-inspired cuisine that is gluten free, sugar free, full of vitamins and vegetables and incredibly delicious. Attendees will learn how to make tortilla pie with nacho “cheese,” elote kale salad, tamales with tempeh chorizo and more. The class will go over cooking different forms of protein including tofu and tempeh. Class price includes take home recipes and hands-on demonstrations for a total of 5 or 6 dishes, snacks and dinner that you will make.

Triple C Brewing 5th Anniversary Block Party

August 19 at Triple C Brewing Company – Free admission

Triple C Brewing Company is celebrating five years in business by closing down the whole street for a block party. Along with a special beer release, there will be multiple food trucks and live music by Jamorah, cover band Mojo Rockus and bluegrass band Brushfire Stankgrass from Asheville, NC. Triple C will be debuting their bar in the new private event space across the street from the original taproom. This event will be free admission and have an outdoor misting station, perfect for you and your furry friends in the August heat.

A Very Summery Dinner with Noda Brewing

August 23 at Fran’s Filling Station – $40

Fran’s Filling Station is partnering with Noda Brewing to host a delicious and affordable beer dinner. For only $40, diners will get three courses paired with full size brews, which boils down to only $13 per course and beer pairing. Fran Scibelli, owner and creator behind Fran’s Filling Stations, has been in the Charlotte culinary scene since 1994 when she opened her first restaurant and will not disappoint with her expert food and spirit pairings.

Chef’s Best 2017

August 25 at Charlotte Convention Center – $91

To benefit The Second Harvest Food Bank, Harris Teeter and other local and national sponsors are hosting the annual Chef’s Best on August 25. The night will include a reception starting at 6:00 p.m. followed by a three course dinner prepared by Fahrenheit’s Executive Chef Rocco Whalen. Chef’s Best will also boast music, a live auction and raffle prizes to raise money for this worthy charity. Enjoy an impressive meal and a night out while also feeding another in need in the Charlotte area.

The Order of the Red Banner Dinner

August 27 at The Cellar at Duckworth’s – $100+

The Cellar at Duckworth’s, a premier restaurant under Duckworth’s Grill in Uptown, will hold The Order of the Red Banner dinner for beer snobs and foodies alike. Cigar City Brewing chose The Cellar at Duckworth’s as North Carolina’s host for the exclusive beer pairing dinner, which will serve five variations of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout. Executive Chef Fred Quinones will develop a special menu for the event that will pair effortlessly with the stout. There is a limit of 40 attendees for this event so get your tickets now for a night of delicious food and beer knowledge from Wayne Wambles, Cigar City Brew master, and Neil Callaghan.

Beef + Bourbon

August 31 at The Asbury – $65

Chef Matthew Krenz will be showcasing some of the freshest beef from his own family’s cattle ranch at the second collaboration dinner this month. Chef Krenz will be joined by Piedmont Executive Chef John May, from Durham, NC. Chef May has been featured on several episodes of award winning public television series, A Chef’s Life. Chefs May and Krenz will team up to highlight Krenz Ranch beef and Kentucky bourbon for a epicurean dinner, perfect for date night or as a gift for any steak or bourbon fanatic.
