Charlotte’s most unique festival, Breakin’ Convention, returns with an all new slate of international hip hop stars lighting up the Knight Theater stage. There’s also FREE fun for all ages before the main stage performances and during intermission outside on the Levine Center for the Arts Plaza.
Direct from London’s Sadler’s Wells theatre, where it’s one of Britain’s hottest annual events, Breakin’ Convention sets out to break the mold, taking the energy and athleticism of street hip hop and fusing it with the theatrical values of the theater. The result is amazing, joyful and often eye-popping, and it will upend everything you think you know about hip hop dance and culture.
Experience performances by international stars from France, the U.K., the U.S. and South Africa, including the jaw-dropping Soweto Skeleton Movers (South Africa), plus the work of Charlotte’s best graffiti artists, who will paint the Knight Theater’s interior columns with custom works for the festival.
Dynamic. Diverse. Different. Breakin’ Convention also takes you inside hip hop with FREE preshow and intermission interactive activities and entertainment that’s fun for all ages. Check out some of Charlotte’s own dynamic DJs and dancers performing on outdoor stages on the Levine Center for the Arts Plaza. Or try your hand at graffiti painting. The fun begins at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening with main stage performances at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets begin as low as $20. (Festival entertainment and activities on the plaza are FREE and open to the public. No ticket needed!)
On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 15, Breakin’ Convention will celebrate another fantastic visit to the Queen City with a FREE Street Jam at Spirit Square. Enjoy more interactive activities, workshops, free entertainment and demonstrations, including live DJs, cyphers, graffiti painting and more! Come out and join the fun!
