11 must-see Artists at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival

By Katie Kennedy

March 2, 2016

Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival in Okeechobee, Florida will host four days, five stages and over 80 of some of the most popular artists in today’s music scene for its inaugural event this month from March 4-6.

Days can be spent lying on the beachfront cooling off in the water, while listening to an eclectic mix of bands or hanging out in Yogachobee village practicing wellness and flow arts. The music never ends; it goes all through the night to the early morning in Jungle 51. With a Coachella-esque lineup, Burning Man-inspired art fixtures, and pow-wows comparable to a Bonnaroo Superjam it’s no wonder the New York Times named it a spot “Where Music Lovers Should Go in 2016.”

Headliners will include Mumford and Sons, Bassnectar, Kendrick Lamar, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, Fetty Wap and many, many more. Pretty impressive lineup for a first year festival. All of this for an extremely reasonable ticket price. They even have a payment plan that allows you to attend the festival and then pay.

We know that this stacked lineup can make it easy to overlook the guys in smaller text but we wouldn’t want you missing some pretty awesome artists. If you’re like us and are driving about nine hours for the festival, do yourself a favor and make a playlist including these names for the road trip.

Joey Bada$$ – Friday 9:00pm-10:00pm NOW Stage

Interested in hearing the future of hip hop? Then you are not going to want to miss Brooklyn native Joey Bada$$. This young rapper has spent the last few years opening for names like Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, ASAP Rocky and B.O.B. With influence starting from old school hip-hop to modern day rap, he is notorious for keeping his music unique, authentic and raw.

Jason Isbell – Sunday 4:00pm-5: 15pm BE Stage

Sunday blues at a festival are, without a doubt, the real thing: perfect for lying on a blanket with your friends, drinking a Bloody Mary while being serenaded by some soul touching lyrics.

Lettuce – Saturday 12:50am-2:00am HERE Stage

If getting the funk down is your thing, you do not want to miss Lettuce’s late night show. With a bass guitarist who has been given the middle name “Jesus” from fans, every show is unique and full of grooving. No need to worry Bassnectar fans, you’ll still be able to catch a good hour of their set.

Dr. Dog – Saturday 4:15pm-5:15pm BE Stage

These guys have given themselves a serious reputation for their live shows. Previously collaborating with a cast of 30 from The Pig Iron Theatre Company to create an original performance, pleasing rock ‘n’ roll lovers as well as theatregoers. Okeechobee will be one of their first stops of many for 2016, and we are pretty excited to see what they have in store for this year.

Deer Tick – Saturday 2:45pm-3:45pm BE Stage

Best described as an alternative rock band, with a little added folk, blues and, despite their heavy deniance, a country music influence. They’re the perfect Saturday afternoon pick me up.

Nahko & Medicine for the People – Friday – 4:30pm-5:30pm NOW Stage

For a guaranteed feel good set created by a mix of hip hop and folk music, be sure to find yourself at the NOW stage for this Oregon-based band. Nahko has dedicated his musical career to creating melodies that tell meaningful stories and create a powerful message.

Kamasi Washington – Friday 10:45pm-11:45pm HERE Stage

Ten-piece jazz band anyone? You may know Washington from hitting #1 on many iTunes jazz charts, as well as touring and recording with Lauryn Hill, Chaka Khan and, yes, even Snoop Dogg.

Swimm – Saturday 12:30am-1:30am NOW Stage

Growing up on the “Space Coast” of Florida where locals often watch rockets launch into space from their surfboards, this duo successfully created a musical representation of their hometown. Throwing in a little LA inspo on top of their psych-pop lyrics, Swimm will be sure to have you dancing late into Friday night.

Manic Focus – Saturday 6:00pm-7:00pm Aquachobee Beach

If dance parties are your thing, then what would be a better way to kick off your Saturday night than to dance in the sand to some hip-hop-electro-soul-funky-rock beats? Manic’s setup is just as original and unique as his music, leaving no question as to why he has played venues and music festivals around the world.

The Oh Hellos – Friday 3:00pm-4:00pm NOW Stage

Who doesn’t love two siblings on one stage? Successfully mixing up several styles and genres to create music best described as eclectic folk rock, these Texas natives will have you dancing, laughing and maybe even crying.

Portugal. The Man – Saturday 12:30am-2:00am NOW Stage

Starting out as high school friends who would play music together after school and now rocking the stages of Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo this psychedelic rock trio will leave you feeling purple, yellow, red & blue.
