You might have noticed some strange activity in Plaza Midwood and surrounding areas in Charlotte over the last couple of weeks. Film trucks, lights, cameras, and dollies have been nearly non-existent in the city since the North Carolina film tax incentive shifted into a Grant program in 2015, but there is a new film production taking place in Charlotte.
The film being shot in and around the Plaza Midwood area is called “American Animals,” directed by Bart Layton who won a British Academy Film Award for outstanding debut film in 2013 for The Imposter. Layton is also an executive producer and creative director for the British film company, Raw Productions. The movie stars Evan Peters (American Horror Story, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse) and Blake Jenner, an up-and-comer who recently starred in the Richard Linklater film, Everybody Wants Some!! and The Edge of Seventeen in addition to the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee.
The indie film written and directed by Bart Layton is about four young male adults who attempt to pull off one of the craziest heists in American history. The movie is classified in the crime and drama genres and blurs the line between truth and fiction in “a wild story of money, movies and the search for meaning,” according to a recent Deadline article.
Production teams, trucks, lights, cameras and equipment have been spotted on Central Ave. in Plaza Midwood and also at Alexander Michaels over the last week.
This is the first time a TV or film production has taken place in Plaza Midwood since the USA Network pilot, “The Novice” in December of 2013, when the neighborhood temporarily morphed into Korea Town. “The Novice” never got picked up by the network.
Want to be an extra in the movie? Looks like there’s an open casting call recently announced by Charlotte casting company, Tona B. Dahlquist Casting.
