The world has been mourning the loss of the legendary gospel and soul singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin today. While photos and videos are shared to remember the incredibly talented “Respect” singer who was nicknamed the “Queen of Soul” in the sixties when she was just in her twenties, many forget she was also a godmother to Whitney Houston.
On Monday, February 13, 2012, two days after Whitney Houston’s passing, Aretha Franklin played a private show in Charlotte at McGlohon Theater. Roughly 600 people were in attendance and while many feared that she may cancel the show, Franklin performed as scheduled. About 45 minutes into her set, she paid a touching tribute to Whitney Houston by performing a beautiful rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” She again played the song in her honor at Essence Festival in New Orleans later that year.
