Former president Barack Obama shared his annual list of favorite songs of the year, and many were surprised to see not one, not two, but five North Carolina artists featured on the list. Obama has long been known to have great music taste, and this year’s list proves no different. From The National to Snoh Aalegra to Kaytranada, 44 knows what’s up in modern music.

This year’s list features Fayetteville native J. Cole (“Middle Child“), and of course, 2019’s breakout Charlotte rap superstar DaBaby (“Suge“). Many may not be familiar with Lesthegenius (Leslie Robbin-Coker), a rapper with West African roots, born in London, England and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. His song “Raleighwood Hills” featuring Sonny Miles (12 Raleigh acts you need to know) and Jaxson Free (also from North Carolina) was released on September 21 and has received a lot of attention in the last 24 hours.
