Beyoncé and Jay-Z rolled through Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina like a swift hurricane on their much-anticipated On the Run II Tour on Tuesday. It was the first concert at the South Carolina Gamecocks home turf since 2013 (Zac Brown and Kenny Chesney), and with any outdoor stadium production, there’s always a concern of rain and traffic nightmares. It’s rare for such a large tour production to choose a football stadium that has never hosted a concert of this magnitude, but there aren’t many options for artists like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Their 43-song setlist was a time capsule into their illustrious careers, who on their own, could warrant the masses.

The city seemed well prepared for the large production as Bey and Hov were honored with a key to city by Mayor Steve Benjamin, and the sound, visuals, and logistics were for the most part, on point. Over 40,000 people were in attendance as the energy and anticipation prior to the concert may have rivaled a USC football game with fervent fans, mostly from the Beyhive camp ready hours before the show.

Just the sheer moment of seeing Beyoncé and Jay-Z– quite possibly the most revered artists in Rap and R&B/Pop– rising onto the stage holding hands was a mythical sight. As the self-proclaimed new Bobbie and Whitney in the 2002 classic Rap/R&B collab “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” would suggest, their lives have become a real-life human celebrity drama. One thing has remained very clear for Jay and Bey throughout the years–their music. It continues to permeate pop culture and although their releases are now few and far between, their legacies continue to grow.

With the rambunctious DJ Khaled playing all of the hip-hop classics to get the crowd primed and the multi-talented R&B duo Chloe X Halle opening up, there was an onslaught of hits that reverberated through the immense speakers. Rich visuals lit up the colossal video screens as fireworks shot from multiple angles and thousands sang along to the deep catalog of hits.
