Broadway Dreams come true for aspiring actors in Charlotte

Bright lights, big city, and big talent is making its way from Broadway to the Blumenthal this weekend, August 4th and 5th. The Broadway Dreams Summer Intensive, a two-week theatre program which focuses on acting, dance, and vocal performance, will culminate with two public showcases put together by both stars and students. This year, the production will include musical selections from Chess, The Who’s Tommy, Company, Sister Act, Sweet Charity, along with dance numbers as seen on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Since 2006, the parent organization, Broadway Dreams, has been orchestrating their mission which is ‘to provide youth and young adults of all socioeconomic backgrounds with performance training, life skills building, and mentorship opportunities from the entertainment industry’s most distinguished talents.’ The variety of programs rely on fundraising to subsidize tuition and provide scholarships for students who may not otherwise have access. For a donation of $1000 patrons can sponsor a Broadway Dreams student and see their growth and success first hand and they move through the program. Nearly half of all Broadway Dreams students rely on the nearly $1M in scholarships that have been dispersed to date.

In addition to the Summer Intensive, which was held at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte this year, the organization offers other trainings throughout the year, nationally and abroad. These trainings include weekend or weeklong immersives, programs in partnership with high schools, and continuing education for Broadway Dreams alumni. Each program, which is put on by Broadway stars and influencers, is tailored to the students interests, promotes collaboration, and provides in-depth education about the history of theater.

Broadway Dreams has maintained regular presence in cities Atlanta, Aspen, Charlotte, Los Angeles, New York,Omaha, Park City, Philadelphia, and Sacramento and internationally in Fortaleza, Brazil; Moscow, Russia; Toronto, Canada

The mantra of this years performance is #cometogether. As the name suggests, both students and stars, from hits like Glee and Cats, have joined together to create a unique mashup of well-known musical and dance numbers. An impressive feat, considering a typical Broadway show usually allows six to eight weeks of rehearsals. As the program focuses heavily on technique and discipline, the students will surely be coming to the stage with a new respect and a refreshed passion for their art. #cometogether has already played to sold out audiences in several cities including Atlanta, Aspen, New York, and L.A. and, in addition to Charlotte, have upcoming performances in Toronto and Philadelphia.
