Hailing from the mecca of basketball, The Hoosier State of Indiana, Cody Zeller has an impressive resume at the young age of 23. Zeller comes from a prominent basketball family, brother of current Boston Celtics center Tyler, recent Notre Dame standout Luke, and he’s also the nephew of former NBA player Al Eberhard.
Cody was named with the prestigious honor of “Mr. Basketball” in 2011, a recognition given to the best player in the state of Indiana each year. After a stellar two years at his home state college of Indiana University, Cody was drafted 4th overall in the 2013 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets.
As the Hornets center this year, the 7-foot Zeller averaged 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. We had a chance to ask Cody a few questions in our new series called Off Court CLTure to see how he likes to spend his time off the court and in our city.
CLTure: What are you currently listening to?
Cody Zeller: Kenny Chesney, Tori Kelly, Needtobreathe, Gavin DeGraw, Casting Crowns, and Matthew West.
CLTure: What are your favorite places to eat in Charlotte?
Cody Zeller: Cowfish, Maggiano’s, Tupelo Honey, and Eddie’s Place.
CLTure: What is one thing that you really love about Charlotte?
Cody Zeller: I love the people in Charlotte. Everyone is friendly and easy to get along with. Uptown is full of younger professionals which makes the city fun and lively.
CLTure: What is one thing that you find really odd about Charlotte?
Cody Zeller: Nobody in Charlotte knows how to deal with snow or ice. I’m from Indiana so we are used to driving and continuing our normal days with inches or even feet of snow. In Charlotte the entire city shuts down if there is any snow even in the forecast.
CLTure: Who was your favorite basketball player growing up?
Cody Zeller: Dirk Nowitzki
CLTure: If you weren’t a basketball player, what do you think you would be doing?
Cody Zeller: Before I left for the NBA Draft, I was in the Kelley School of Business and majoring in Business Management. If I wasn’t playing basketball then I would love to be a manager or owner of a small business.
