In a homecoming show, Charlotte’s Cyanca and Reuben Vincent will take the stage on Friday night at Neighborhood Theatre to celebrate Cyanca’s latest release, Fast Times. The R&B singer’s first EP since 2019 has been treated with glowing reception and she has tagged Jamla’s Reuben Vincent, who is about to drop an anticipated project himself, to join the fun.
Reuben Vincent’s dedication to his craft shines through every record he puts out, from his adolescent musings on Myers Park (2017) to his coming-of-age EP Boy Meets World (2020). Vincent’s opening set on Friday may feel like a sneak preview of his anticipated unreleased project. His project– which may have been mixed by longtime Jay-Z engineer Guru, according to a story on Vincent’s Instagram– will likely feature some of his tightest writing and creative vocal play. But while we’ve been waiting for new music, Vincent has been hard at work, providing a stunning feature on the 9th Wonder remix of UK soul artist Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, and appearing on 2021 releases from New York’s Niko Brim and Atlanta’s Domani. Vincent has promised to perform some songs from his new project, so the rapper’s opening set will showcase unreleased tracks alongside those from his current catalog.
Cyanca’s September release, Fast Times, consists of five snack-sized songs that explore a range of genre conventions, featuring her signature soul overtones alongside notes of hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and house. In this formal playfulness, Cyanca’s creative output is remarkable both in its maturity and dynamism. While her body of work has marked stylistic continuity, she is unafraid to explore different sounds, cadences, and flows to create the kind of earworms that keep you coming back for more. In this exploration, Fast Times builds on the successes of Isle of Queens (2017) and I’m Staying Home (2019), but it is certainly her most dynamic project. Friday’s audience can expect to hear hits like “New Phone, Who Dis?” and “PB&J,” but you should also expect a live show that’ll keep you on your toes. Cyanca is an artist who thinks of her craft in its expressive totality, putting forth full creative effort in all of her work. Undoubtedly, Cyanca is going to bring that energy to the stage.
Both Vincent and Cyanca– previewing new music on one hand and celebrating a release on the other– will bring a buzz to the Neighborhood Theatre on Friday night. This show will be their first on home turf since the pandemic, so their return will almost certainly offer an indelible evening of entertainment.
