Dirty Art Club, a Charlotte-based downtempo psych-hop act, is the moniker used by digital music artist Matt Cagle. DAC will be hosting a vinyl release party for his latest album, Basement Seance, on Saturday, March 10 at Snug Harbor. Though everyone on the bill is local, it feels like this lineup will be taking us on a trip to a mysterious coastal city to celebrate. Cagle said he brought this eclectic lineup together by condensing a list of his favorite bands/people in the area that made “the most and least sense, simultaneously.”
“I had a lot of different ideas, but these three– Don Telling’s Island Mysteries, Zodiac Lovers and Blank Ocean– seemed to make the smoothest lineup for the vibe I had in mind,” said Cagle.
Each detail that goes into the atmosphere Cagle creates is important, including the artwork on the cover of the album. He called on visual artist Bryan Olson to create the curious cover art for Basement Seance because, “his stuff looks like the music sounds.” (Olson also plays in the band Shadowgraphs and recently relocated from Charlotte to Portland.) To make his collage artwork, Olson digs through decades-old ephemera such as magazines and science books. He adds, subtracts and layers the images to make something new. That process parallels with Cagle’s process of making music. To create his sound, Cagle revisits old, mostly forgotten, downtempo recordings and comes up with live instrumentation in his home studio. He layers both with bits of vintage voices in a way that feels like you’re casually weaving through a summer lounge party catching random pieces of intriguing interactions.
Fans of Dirty Art Club’s past work can expect Basement Seance to be “darker and more precise…also a lot heavier.” Basement Seance by Dirty Art Club is currently available at DirtyArtClub.com, and vinyl copies will be available at the show on March 10 at Snug Harbor.
