Neighborhood Theatre celebrates the music and impact of legendary North Carolina bluegrass musician and songwriter Doc Watson at the 3rd Annual Doc Watson Birthday Celebration. The evening will feature Watson’s longtime musical partner, Jack Lawrence (joined by his son Adam), along with performances by Red Rocking Chair, Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars, J.E.D.S., and more.

Born in the small town of Deep Gap, North Carolina, in 1923, Watson’s career took off in the early ’60s after his landmark appearance at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival. That performance led to a deal with Vanguard Records and the release of his self-titled debut album in 1964.

Watson’s work played a pivotal role in bringing North Carolina Appalachian music to national audiences. He released over 30 albums throughout his career and founded MerleFest in 1988 in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in memory of his late son Merle, who passed away in 1985. In 2012, Watson was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and his legacy continues to shape the world of folk and bluegrass music today.
