The 72nd ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off Tuesday, returning to Charlotte’s Spectrum Center for the first time since 2019, with 14 teams vying for the conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth. Top seeds Duke (No. 1), Louisville (No. 13), and Clemson (No. 10) aim to strengthen their March Madness resumes, while North Carolina, Wake Forest, and SMU look to impress the selection committee with a tournament run.
Duke (28-3, 19-1 ACC) enters as the No. 1 seed after winning the outright regular-season title. The Blue Devils, seeking their ACC-record 23rd tournament championship, are the favorites but still face a challenge, with Clemson — responsible for Duke’s only conference loss — on the opposite side of the bracket.
Louisville (25-6, 18-2) and Clemson (26-5, 18-2) boast the same record in conference, but the Cardinals secured the No. 2 seed with the tiebreaker after beating Clemson 74-64 on January 7. Wake Forest (21-10, 13-7) grabbed the final double bye, edging North Carolina and SMU in a three-team tiebreaker after going 2-0 against the Tar Heels and Mustangs in the regular season.
This year’s tournament also marks the ACC debuts of Stanford, SMU, and California. Stanford and SMU secured first-round byes, while California will make its first-ever ACC Tournament appearance on Tuesday.
The Tar Heels enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play in the second round Wednesday against the winner of No. 12 Notre Dame vs. No. 13 Pitt. While UNC’s NCAA Tournament status remains uncertain, a deep run would definitely strengthen their chances.
All 14 tournament games will be nationally televised on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ACC Network.
