In partnership with UNC Charlotte, JazzArts Charlotte will celebrate the life and music of the trailblazing Jazz saxophonist and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-winner, Charlie “Bird” Parker. The event will include Parker’s bebop jazz compositions plus featured selections from the rarely played Charlie Parker with Strings albums.
The legendary jazz saxophonist, Parker, led the development of bebop with his musical virtuosity and revolutionary harmonic concepts. While Parker is recognized for developing the fast-paced sound of bebop, he was a lover of classical music. In 1974, Parker won a Grammy for Best Performance by a Soloist titled, First Recordings!, and in 1984 was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Will Campbell, UNC Charlotte Director of Jazz Studies, will be leading this musical collaboration, combining a full string section with jazz. Campbell has toured internationally as a member of the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra and his recording credits include Blue Light, Red Light, When My Heart Finds Christmas, and The New York Big Band Concert (DVD).
