The late, great Daniel Johnston touched many people’s hearts with his earnest artwork despite struggling nearly his entire life with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. Johnston crafted his turmoil into lasting and profound lo-fi songs and visual artwork starting in the late ’80s that appealed to everyone from social outsiders to the playful artist, as well as fellow tender-hearts of the world over. Johnston is renowned for his simplistic take on magnanimous topics like anxiety, depression, and life’s general despairing moments, providing an accessible lifeboat of compassion and understanding through his songwriting.
