Kick off Black History Month with the first of the four-part virtual series from The Gantt, Homage to the Black South: Art and Culture Appreciation. Following the opening of legendary photographer Jamel Shabazz’s new exhibit, Reflections of a People: Photographs from the Archive of Jamel Shabazz, The Gantt will host an online conversation with Shabazz.

For more than 40 years, Shabazz has been a voice for his people, in New York City and around the world. He was influenced by the work of photographers Leonard Freed, Gordon Parks and the Black Arts Movement. Consequently, he used his photographs as a catalyst for change. Shabazz provided a sense of possibility to young Black people whose once tight-knit New York City communities had been ravaged in the ’80s by the crack cocaine epidemic and the policies of the Reagan era.

In the late ’90s, Shabazz’s photographs were published in leading rap music publications, Trace Magazine and The Source, which lead to his debut book, Back In The Days (Powerhouse Books, 2001). Back In the Days documented New York City’s emerging hip-hop culture during the ’80s.
