Lakou Mizik is a multigenerational collective of Haitian musicians formed in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake, consisting of Sanba Zao, Steeve Valcourt, Jonas Attis, Nadine Remy, Lamarre Junior, Peterson “Ti Piti” Joseph, and Belony Beniste. The group includes elder legends and rising young talents, united in a mission to honor the healing spirit of their culture and communicate a message of pride, strength and hope.
The collective connected with producers Chris Velan (Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars) and Iestyn Polson (David Gray, David Bowie, Patti Smith) to release their debut album, Wa Di Yo, on April 1, 2016 through Cumbancha Records. In 2019, the group collaborated with musicians at New Orleans Jazz Fest for their follow-up album, HaitiaNola, featuring Cyril Neville, Trombone Shorty, Tarriona “Tank” Ball (Tank and the Bangas), The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Jon Cleary, and more.
