This program is comprised of three innovative dance performances, each inspired by a different work of art. The world premiere of “Dwellings like a Mirage in the Heat” explores the chance methods devised by John Cage and Merce Cunningham at Black Mountain College. It is a long-distance collaboration between dancers Brian McGinnis (Chicago), Eric Mullis (Charlotte), and Jennifer Sydor (NYC), and composer Brent Bagwell (Charlotte), who will provide live accompaniment.
Sydor and McGinnis will also present “Whether One” inspired by Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami’s book about the Kobe earthquake.
Sydor dances with The Metropolitan Opera, has toured with the legendary Wooster Group, and has been praised by The Boston Globe and The New York Times. McGinnis has performed at the Bolshoi Theatre, American Dance Festival, Kennedy Center, and Spoleto Festival in Italy.
Local choreographer Megan Payne will present “Magnificent Mirage” inspired by the haunting work of experimental fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville. The piece investigates themes of disintegration and gender conformity.
