The New Familiars formed in 2006 and immediately took to the road for a few years playing 150+ shows per year and countless festivals and shows with some of the industry’s big players (Avett Bros, Greg Allman, Infamous Stringdusters, Del McCoury, Dawes); The New Familiars were definitely on the beginning of the “acoustic/americana” resurgence that has been happening for a few years now, playing festivals like Merlefest, Floydfest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots and more. The band has an extensive catalog of original music but also liked to throw interesting covers in by bands they love.
In 2010 The New Familiars were honored to be asked to open for legendary musician Levon Helm. The Band has been an extremely huge influence on everyone in The New Familiars and this was a absolute dream come true for the guys.
When Levon passed away in April of 2012 the band wanted to pay their respects and came up with the idea of a “Last Waltz” type of show around Thanksgiving (just like the original), they brought in a horn section and special guests to perform songs that Levon played on (which gives you a ton of stuff to pick from, The Band, solo plus all of the stuff they recorded with Bob Dylan)
The result was a celebration of Levon Helm & The Band and the crowd loved it! That first show was magical and the idea of an annual Thanksgiving show was born. Now in its sixth year, the Levon Helm tribute show is one of the most fun nights of the year for the band and all of their friends.
