Nestled in the banks of Suwannee River in northern Florida is an 800-acre property better known as Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Each October since 2013, Suwannee Music Park hosts its biggest festival, Hulaween, with over 20,000 expected attendees. Hulaween started as The String Cheese Incident’s annual Halloween festival, which took place in various locations across the country, and has turned into a four-day music and art festival with over 100 bands celebrating its 5 year anniversary. The pre party on Thursday evening will include performances from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Liquid Stranger and two sets from Umphrey’s Mcgee. The lineup features an impressive group of artists playing five stages including: Bassnectar, Run The Jewels, Damian Marley, Griz, Vince Staples, Kamasi Washington and of course, seven sets of The String Cheese Incident. Aside from the musical performances, Suwannee Hulaween will be filled with breathtaking art, mind, body activities and philanthropic programs.
Here are a few:
Each year Spirit Lake and the adjacent forest are made over into a large, multifaceted art installation filled with lasers, fire, paintings, music and many other surprises. The enchanted forest is sure to transport attendees into a world out of their wildest dreams. Artists will be building the infamous metal sculptures again complete with fire and Thomas Danbo will be returning with another creature in the forest, made entirely of wooden pallets. Spirit Lake will also be home to the Incendia stage and the silent disco, both playing electronic music until the early hours of the morning.
Activities at the lake
Music festivals are known to take a toll on your mental and physical health between miles of walking, hours of dancing and little time for a good night’s sleep. Hulaween will offer plenty activities to heal your mind, body and soul throughout the weekend. Right outside Spirit Lake, professional instructors will be hosting classes each day. Activities will range from dance to yoga to meditation classes and a full schedule of activities will be released soon.
The Green Team
Festival attendees are always asked to leave the venue cleaner than when they came and Hulaween makes this easy with the Green Team. The Green Team is the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park’s own composting and recycling program. Stop by the Recycle Rewards tent to win cool prizes just for cleaning up. Green Team members will be handing out clear bags to encourage recycling within the festival to keep the ground clear and the park beautiful. In addition to recycling, guests are also being asked to carpool to reduce gas emissions and to use refillable water bottles.
For the first year ever, Suwannee Hulaween, The Suwannee Music Foundation and Conscious Alliance are partnering to host an inaugural food drive to benefit Love Inc. Food Bank in Live Oak, Florida. Love Inc. is a local charity that coordinates local churches and volunteers to provide food, shoes, household items and more to those in need. Suwannee guests are being asked to bring extra non perishable food items to donate. Incentives are even being offered and the first 600 patrons to donate 20 non-perishable food items or a suggested monetary donation to the Food Drive will receive a limited edition event poster. Stop by the Conscious Alliance tent starting Friday at 10 a.m. to do good and give back to the local community.
Kyle’s Craft Brew Corner
Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident is hosting a Craft Brew Corner for beer enthusiasts. Located near The Patch Stage, the beer tent will hold unique beer tastings as well as special performances. Lagunitas Brewing Company, from California, will premiere their collaboration beer on Friday and a rare beer on Saturday at noon. Following the rare beer presentation Hollingsworth and Jason Hann of SCI will perform an intimate set at the beer tent. On Sunday, there will be an intellectual beer and music discussion and Dunedin Brewery, the oldest microbrewery in Florida, will present their collaboration beer. Take a break from the music and stop by the Craft Brew Corner to grab a cold one and refresh.
