Author Roald Dahl sends his young protagonists on magical, and often dangerous, adventures to overcome their dark circumstances. In addition to Matilda, his iconic children’s books include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG. While all of these have received the movie treatment (Spielberg’s The BFG will hit theaters this summer), the unique musical adaptation of Matilda that premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in late 2010 has been especially celebrated.
Matilda the Musical quickly went from its initial short-lived residency in Shakespeare’s small hometown to the West End of London in 2011, to Broadway in 2013, and now to the Belk Theater in Charlotte as part of its U.S. tour that began in 2015. It has won over 50 awards internationally, including the U.K.’s Laurence Olivier Awards for best new musical, best director (Matthew Warchus), best choreographer (Peter Darling), and best actress for its four rotating Matildas. While it had a little more competition for the 2013 Tony Awards in the United States (Kinky Boots also premiered that year), Dennis Kelly was still recognized with the award for best book of a musical.
Matilda the Musical is a heartwarming underdog story that features comically-evil villains. From rebelling against her own unfit parents to escaping the grip of the infamous headmistresses Miss Trunchbull, Matilda and her friends have their work cut out for them. For that, this musical is one of the ultimate family-friendly productions to experience with kids in Charlotte this year. They will enjoy seeing an impressive cast of their peers on stage and rooting for the story’s young heroes.
