The 2025‑26 college basketball season tips off Tuesday as the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils face the Texas Longhorns in the Dick Vitale Invitational at the Spectrum Center. Duke enters the season under fourth‑year head coach Jon Scheyer, coming off a 35‑4 campaign that included an ACC regular‑season crown, an ACC Tournament title, and a Final Four appearance. The Blue Devils return six players and welcome the nation’s No. 1‑ranked recruiting class, led by Cameron Boozer. The game also marks the debut of Sean Miller as Texas head coach; Miller posted a 487‑196 (.713) record over 20 seasons at Xavier and Arizona, including 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Charlotte Checkers return home to Bojangles Coliseum this weekend for a two-game series against the North Division-leading Syracuse Crunch after a three-game road stretch. Charlotte went 1-2 on the trip, highlighted by a 5-3 win over Springfield, where Sandis Vilmanis netted two goals and goaltender Cooper Black recorded a season-high 32 saves. The Checkers currently sit fifth in the Atlantic Division (4-4-1-0) and will look to build some consistency as they face a tough Crunch team.

Celebrate music legends at the opening party for The Gantt’s new exhibit, Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs. The exhibition honors the cultural impact of jazz through 33 timeless black-and-white photographs by 15 renowned photographers. Spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, the collection captures the golden age of jazz — from intimate neighborhood stages to smoky clubs. Featured portraits include Chuck Stewart’s images of saxophonists Eric Dolphy and John Coltrane, as well as Ed van der Elsken’s 1958 portrait of Louis Armstrong at the Newport Jazz Festival. The evening will also feature a live performance by Braxton Bateman and a panel discussion at 7:00 p.m. with Jennifer Brown and Mark Anthony Neal.

Charlotte FC will host New York City FC on Friday night at Bank of America Stadium for a decisive Game 3 in the MLS Cup Playoffs. On the brink of elimination in Game 2, The Crown kept their season alive with a dramatic 7-6 penalty-kick shootout win after a scoreless draw in New York. Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina once again came through in the clutch, making five saves in regular time and sealing the victory with the final stop. Northwest School of the Arts alum and Charlotte-area native Reneé Rapp returns home for her U.S. tour with Fousheé. The rising pop star and actress — best known for her portrayal of Regina George in both the Broadway musical Mean Girls and its 2024 film adaptation — released her debut studio album Snow Angel in 2023, followed by her latest, Bite Me, on August 1, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard charts. Rapp’s musical and theatrical journey began in 2018 when she won the Blumey Award for Best Actress for her performance as Sandra in Big Fish at Charlotte’s Belk Theater. That same year, she gained national recognition by winning Best Performance by an Actress at the prestigious Jimmy Awards in New York City, earning a $10,000 scholarship that helped launch her career. Talented New Jersey R&B artist Fousheé, best known for her song “Deep End” and her collaborations with Steve Lacy on “Sunshine” and “Bad Habit,” will open the show.
