Australian folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vance Joy returns to Charlotte to headline Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre. The ARIA Award-winning artist, best known for massive hits like “Riptide,” “Mess Is Mine,” “Georgia,” and “Missing Piece,” recently released a new single, “Divine Feelings,” the first half of a double A-side that also features “Fascination in the Dark,” set to arrive in October. He’ll be joined by fellow Australian indie-folk artist Hazlett, Georgia native Jonah Kagen, and Huntington, California’s Kyle Schuesler, a former contestant on the 25th season of The Voice.

Charlotte Film Festival (September 23-28)

The 17th Charlotte Film Festival takes place September 23-28 at the Independent Picture House, with daily panel discussions next door at Eighty Eights. Founded in 2006 to give established and emerging filmmakers a weekend to showcase their work, the festival has grown to attract filmmakers from around the world, industry professionals, and a dedicated audience of film fans. Bringing independent cinema to Charlotte and the surrounding area, the festival offers a diverse mix of features, shorts, documentaries, and student films, with panels and daily talks providing audiences with behind-the-scenes insights from directors, editors, and producers. Notable films this year include the Colin Hanks-directed, Ryan Reynolds-produced documentary on the beloved comedian John Candy, I Like Me; John Woo’s 1992 groundbreaking Hong Kong thriller Hard Boiled, presented in a full 4K restoration; Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great; and an encore presentation of Roofman for those who missed its Charlotte premiere at the Carolina Theatre on opening night.

The Darts, a Seattle-based all-female garage-punk band formed in 2016 and known for their raw, Farfisa-infused sound and high-energy live shows, will play Snug Harbor on Tuesday night following the release of their latest album, Nightmare Queens. They’ll be joined by New Zealand punk rock artist Dion Lunadon, best known for his work with The D4 and A Place to Bury Strangers, and Charlotte garage-punk band Paint Fumes.

Bilingual Los Angeles-based indie dream pop band The Marías bring their Submarine tour to Charlotte for a highly anticipated sold-out show at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre, marking their first performance in the city. Named after Puerto Rican-born lead singer María Zardoya, who grew up in Atlanta, the band rose to prominence following their 2018 collaboration with Triathalon on the track “Drip.” After signing with Atlantic Records, they released their debut album, Cinema, in 2021, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Collaborating with Bad Bunny on “Otro Atardecer” from his album Un Verano Sin Ti, the band followed with their second studio album, Submarine, in May 2024. Opening the show is Brooklyn-based indie rock band Momma, consisting of longtime friends Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, who met in high school in Calabasas, California. They are coming off their fourth studio album, Welcome to My Blue Sky, released in April through Polyvinyl Records.

Carolina Ascent FC, Charlotte’s USL Super League club, will celebrate 704 Ladies Night on Wednesday at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The event will feature free popcorn, $4 glasses of wine, and postgame autographs and photos. In their inaugural 2024-25 season, the team clinched the regular-season title (Players’ Shield) with a 12-7-5 record. They have tied their first three games of the 2025-26 season and will look for their first win against Spokane Zephyr FC.

Following the release of his 14th studio album, Lil Wayne celebrates 20 years of Tha Carter series in Charlotte with opener Tyga. Tha Carter, first released in 2004, helped define a new era of hip-hop — both culturally and musically — cementing Wayne as one of the most influential rappers of the 2000s and 2010s. Tha Carter III sold over one million copies in its first week, making it one of the fastest-selling albums in U.S. history, and featured hits like “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” “Got Money,” and “Mrs. Officer.” Tyga, best known for mega hits like “Taste,” “Rack City,” and “Ayo,” is also coming off a new album, NSFW, his first since 2019.

Breakaway Carolina at zMAX Dragway Charlotte Motor Speedway (September 26-27)

Breakaway Carolina, one of the country’s largest traveling music festivals, returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s zMAX Dragway this weekend for two days of non-stop dance music, games, vendors, and brand activations. The festival will feature Kaytranada, making his first-ever Charlotte-area performance, along with Louis the Child, John Summit, Bob Moses, Eli Brown, and many more. Founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 2016, Breakaway debuted in Charlotte in 2017 and expanded to the 125-acre dragway in 2021. Since then, the festival has grown to multiple cities nationwide and was named Best Festival Series at the 2024 EDM Awards in Miami.

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers with Charlotte Symphony Orchestra at The Amp Ballantyne (7:00 p.m.)

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers team up with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for a rare musical collaboration at The Amp Ballantyne. The Grammy Award-winning pianist first rose to prominence with his 1986 debut album with The Range, The Way It Is. The title track became one of the most popular songs of the late ’80s and later inspired Tupac Shakur’s timeless hit “Changes.” In 1991, Hornsby collaborated with Bonnie Raitt on her iconic song “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and served as a part-time member of the Grateful Dead from September 1990 to March 1992, performing over 100 concerts across the U.S. and Europe. A 13-time Grammy nominee, Hornsby has sold more than 11 million albums worldwide and contributed to over 100 records, collaborating with music legends including Bob Dylan, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, Chaka Khan, Bon Iver, Brandon Flowers, Sting, Mavis Staples, and Willie Nelson.

Marc Rebillet with opener Gelli Haha at The Fillmore (8:00 p.m.)

Marc Rebillet, the popular improvisational funk, hip-hop, and electronic music artist and YouTuber returns to Charlotte this week. Rebillet’s career took off in 2016 when he began posting live-streamed videos of himself creating songs in real time using a loop station, keyboard, vocals, and percussion instruments. His spontaneous and interactive performances quickly gained popularity on social media and YouTube earning him a dedicated fanbase. Many of his songs are inspired by live requests from fans, who contact him via a phone number he shares on social media. During the pandemic, Rebillet organized a “drive-in concert tour” in June 2020, performing at twelve shows across eight U.S. drive-in theaters, adhering to social distancing guidelines, and furthering his popularity. He has since performed at Coachella and released three studio albums — Marc Rebillet (2018), Europe (2019), and Loop Daddy III (2020) — as well as two extended plays, Loop Daddy and Loop Daddy II. He’ll be joined by Filipino-American experimental pop artist Gelli Haha, who will open the show.

Comedian, actor, and content creator Kountry Wayne, who rose to fame through his viral social media sketches and made his television debut in 2018 on MTV’s Wild ’N Out, will perform multiple stand-up sets at The Comedy Zone this week. Named one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” in 2021, he has since become a staple on the national comedy circuit, known for his story-driven sketches and original characters.

Town Brewing Company celebrates seven years with an all-day anniversary bash on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Guests can expect live music from seven bands throughout the day, a tattoo pop-up with Capital Crow Tattoo, a local vendor market, and plenty of food, beer, wine, and cocktails. General admission is free, but the VIP Oyster Roast from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. requires a ticket. The roast includes all-you-can-eat raw and steamed oysters, sides, a drink ticket, and reserved seating in the Beer Garden. Tickets are limited, so they  encourage attendees to grab theirs early and join in raising a glass to seven years of Town Brewing Company.

The game will also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the universal language of fútbol, with the team unveiling a new scarf designed by Dominican multimedia artist and Charlotte native Emily Núñez. Charlotte FC currently sits in third place, while Montréal sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Charlotte experimental art-rock band Julian Calendar, co-founded by vocalist and author Jeff Jackson and musician Jeremy Fisher, and also featuring vocalist Hannah Hundley, bassist Scott Thompson, and multi-instrumentalist Sean Robinson, will celebrate the release of their new EP, Speaking a Dead Language, Saturday night at Petra’s. Co-produced with renowned indie rock producer John Agnello, who has worked with artists ranging from John Cougar Mellencamp to John Waite and Sonic Youth, the project spans a wide range of styles — from garage rock and new wave to ambient and hypnotic grooves — while exploring themes of sex, loneliness, betrayal, and a reinterpretation of Green Day’s “Longview.” Julian Calendar will be joined by Curiosidades de Bombrile, the world music project of Davey Blackburn, fresh off their first Hopscotch Music Festival performance, and Charlotte avant-garde jazz duo Ghost Trees, comprised of Brent Bagwell (tenor saxophone) and Seth Nanaa (drums).

Grammy-winning Asheville bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers will perform at Charlotte’s Knight Theater on Saturday night, with local Americana band Time Sawyer opening the show. Longtime collaborators with comedian Steve Martin, with whom they’ve recorded multiple albums including the Grammy-nominated Rare Bird Alert, the Rangers have helped bring contemporary bluegrass to wider audiences. The band released their latest album, Morning Shift, in 2023, following the 2022 departure of founding member and frontman Woody Platt. Time Sawyer, led by singer-songwriter Sam Tayloe — known for his collaborative “Sam on Sunday” shows — released their latest album, Honest Effort, in 2024.

UNC Charlotte’s 47th International Festival takes place on Saturday at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with free admission and parking. One of UNC Charlotte’s longest-standing traditions, founded in 1975, the festival celebrates the region’s cultural richness with over 35 marketplace-style booths staffed by students and community members, dance performances, a Parade of Nations, global cuisine, a giant 30-foot inflatable Earth Balloon, a game zone, and performances on indoor and outdoor stages including Scottish pipes, African folk tales, Caribbean steel drums, Latin music, Hula Carolina, and a Chinese Dragon Dance. Organized by the Office of International Programs with support from campus and community partners, the event is also part of the Charlotte International Arts Festival.

Party in the Park: Artist Market takes place on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Mint Museum Randolph. Spend the afternoon exploring works by more than 70 artists at the Guild of Charlotte Artists Market, enjoy food from trucks including Blasian Asian, The Atomic Dog, Revival Coffee and Ice Cream, and listen to live music by ReUp and Friday Jones. A cash bar will be available on the front terrace, and visitors can enjoy free admission to the museum’s latest exhibitions, Central Impact: Skateboarding’s Art and Influence and Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the lawn. The event is family-friendly, open to the public at no cost, and includes free parking.

Produced by BOOM Charlotte, an artist-led nonprofit committed to cultural equity and collaboration, the event blends the energy of Charlotte’s International Arts Festival with the creativity of the local community. Part mini-BOOM fest and part CIAF closing celebration, the day features dance, music, and interactive activities where attendees can be both participants and audience. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the festival concludes with all CIAF artists invited to connect and mingle with local and international creatives.
