The Panthers will play their final home game of the season on Sunday against the 7-7 Arizona Cardinals, who are still fighting desperately for a playoff spot in the NFC. The Panthers are coming off their worst performance in weeks, allowing 211 yards on the ground in the 30-14 loss to Dallas.
It will be another challenge in the trenches for Carolina, as the Cardinals are ranked seventh in the league in rushing yards per game (141.5), led by their thumping 233-pound running back, James Connor, and dual-threat quarterback, Kyler Murray. The Panthers will be without inside linebackers Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus, who were both placed on injured reserve earlier this week. Jadeveon Clowney is also listed as questionable but will likely play after being out sick, returning to practice on Friday.
Offensively for the Panthers, they’ll need to get back to running the ball, after abandoning the ground attack last week, falling behind early to the Cowboys. Chuba Hubbard, who broke the 1000-yard mark for the first time in his career against the Philadelphia Eagles, had only 10 carries and 32 yards in the loss to Dallas. Bryce Young will be without receiver Xavier Legette (hip) and will need to rely heavily on veteran Adam Thielen and rookie Jalen Coker to help move the chains in the passing game.
The Panthers’ defense will not only have a tough task containing the elusive Kyler Murray and stopping the run, but they’ll also have to focus their attention on Trey McBride, who is second only to Brock Bowers in receptions (89) and receiving yards (938) among tight ends this season. The Cardinals are fighting for their playoff lives, and will likely need to win their remaining games to earn a spot.
The Panthers will take on the Arizona Cardinals in the last home game of the season Sunday, December 21 at 1 p.m., airing on Fox.
