Season 21 of the Jazz Room kicks off with the return of renowned vocalist Sasha Masakowski, who will lead a dynamic six-piece jazz ensemble in a tribute to Bossa Nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim and the music of Brazil.
Hailing from New Orleans, Sasha Masakowski, was named one of Paste Magazine’s 12 jazz artists to watch in 2019, also earning praise from publications like Vanity Fair, Downbeat, and Jazz Times. Masakowski has performed at venues and festivals across the globe, including Monterey Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and Blue Note Jazz Festival. She also currently fronts two bands: New Orleans modern jazz group Art Market and electronic art-rock outfit Tra$h Magnolia.
Masakowski’s tribute to Jobim will feature classics like “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Wave,” and “A Felicidade,” showcasing the timeless charm of Bossa Nova. Jobim, often referred to as the “George Gershwin of Brazil,” was a pivotal figure in bringing Brazilian music to global audiences, particularly through his iconic collaborations with Stan Getz, João Gilberto, and Frank Sinatra. His 1965 collaborative album with saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, Getz/Gilberto, was the first jazz record to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. His 1967 album with Frank Sinatra, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, was also nominated for Album of the Year in 1968.
