Electronic/synth-pop music pioneers, Kraftwerk, are returning to North America in 2025 to celebrate their classic 1974 album, Autobahn, and the 50th anniversary of their first U.S. tour in 1975. The 25-city tour will stop in Charlotte this week at Ovens Auditorium. The multimedia production, led by Kraftwerk founding member Ralf Hütter, will be a fusion of music, visuals, and performance art, continuing the band’s legacy of groundbreaking live performances.
Formed in Düsseldorf in 1970 by Hütter and Florian Schneider, Kraftwerk revolutionized modern music by pioneering synth-pop and electronic experimentation. They combined early computer technology with robotic themes and hypnotic rhythms, creating a futuristic sound that influenced countless genres, including new wave, hip-hop, techno, and EDM. Their work has influenced a diverse range of artists and many genres of modern music, including synth-pop, hip-hop, post-punk, techno, house music, ambient, and club music. Their innovative use of synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders — especially on albums like Trans-Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), and Computer World (1981) — set the foundation for electronic music as we know it today.
In 2014, the Recording Academy honored Kraftwerk with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2024, Kraftwerk celebrated the 50th anniversary of Autobahn with a nine-night residency at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. They last performed in North Carolina at Moogfest in 2014.
