Mandolinist and progressive bluegrass pioneer, Sam Bush, returns to Charlotte’s Neighborhood Theatre this week. The two-time International Bluegrass Music Hall of Famer (2020 with New Grass Revival and 2023 as a solo artist), Bush remains a transformative figure in the genre.

Bush became a member of the Bluegrass Alliance in 1970, later co-founding New Grass Revival in 1971, which fused bluegrass with rock, jazz, and reggae, touring with artists like Leon Russell. Following the band’s breakup in 1989, he joined Emmylou Harris’ Nash Ramblers and later played with Lyle Lovett and Béla Fleck.

Bush launched his solo career with the album Late as Usual in 1984, followed by Glamour & Grits (1996) and Laps in Seven (2006). Known as the “King of Telluride,” he’s also the the recipient of multiple IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year Awards and the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bush will be joined by Raleigh “psychedelic jamgrass” band Into The Fog as openers. The group consisting of Winston Mitchell (mandolin), Derek Lane (upright bass), and Connor Kozlosky (guitar), released a new album, Carolina Moon, in August.
