MerleFest, the Wilkesboro, North Carolina music festival founded in 1988 by guitarist Doc Watson, named for his late son Eddy Merle Watson, is gearing up for a big return this year on September 16-19. After the cancellation of the festival in 2020 due to the pandemic, the “traditional plus” (traditional music of the Appalachian region plus various styles) four-day music festival has announced stellar additions to an already packed lineup.
Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price, and Shovels & Rope will be joining Tedeschi Trucks Band, Melissa Etheridge, Mavis Staples, LeAnn Rimes, and many more on the campus of Wilkesboro Community College in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Other notable artists added to the lineup include rising roots music talent Amythyst Kiah, acoustic fingerstyle guitarist Yasmin Williams, and country singer-songwriter Brittney Spencer.
Featuring 13 stages, the multi-day family-friendly festival draws thousands across the region and includes a bevy of local vendors, nature walks, kids showcases, music camps, and more.
Additional artists will be announced in the coming weeks and tickets will go on sale June 10. Check out more about the festival taking place September 16-19 at merlefest.org.
