Pam Grier, the actress best known for her roles in iconic 1970s Blaxploitation films such as Foxy Brown and Coffy, will be in the Charlotte area this summer for the Mad Monster Expo in Concord. A trailblazer who portrayed strong, independent women defying traditional gender and racial stereotypes, she is recognized as one of cinema’s first female action stars. Grier was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, but moved out of state at an early age due to her father’s military career.

She experienced a career resurgence with her role in Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 film Jackie Brown, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination and introduced her to a new generation of fans. Grier also portrayed Kit Porter in the Showtime television series The L Word from 2004 to 2009. Last year, she announced the development of a Foxy Brown musical and a seven-episode limited series based on her 2010 memoir, Foxy: My Life in Three Acts. Grier currently curates her own channel, Soul Flix, on Roku and Plex.tv, celebrating Black cinema.

The Mad Monster Expo, a horror and pop culture-themed convention known for its celebrity appearances and unique vendors, will take place August 22-24 at the Embassy Suites in Concord. Additional appearances will include David Arquette, best known for his role as Deputy Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise, and Adrienne King, who portrayed Alice Hardy in the Friday the 13th movies.
