25-time Grammy Award-winner and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Stevie Wonder, has announced a special series of concerts in October with 10 shows, including one stop in North Carolina on October 17 at Greensboro Coliseum. In a call for “joy over anger, kindness over recrimination, peace over war” during election season, Wonder will bring his timeless catalog of hits to North Carolina for the first time since 2015 (Charlotte).
The surprise tour titled, “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart,” will kick off in Pittsburgh on October 8 and culminate in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 30. The tour will also be offering a portion of tickets to individuals engaged in efforts to address societal divisions as a way to thank them for their work, according to the press release.
Wonder, a child prodigy who signed with Motown at the age of 11, producing his first No. 1 single, “Fingertips,” in 1963, won three consecutive Grammy Awards for Album of the Year with Innervisions (1973), Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974), and Songs in the Key of Life (1976)– the only artist in history to do so. With 49 Top 40 singles, 32 No. 1 hits, and over 100 million records sold globally; including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award, Wonder is one of the most prolific artists of our times. His 1976 album, Songs In The Key of Life, was preserved in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance.
Beyond his music, Wonder’s humanitarian work has made an indelible mark, as he was also instrumental in establishing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday, participating in numerous global causes, such as the ending of apartheid in South Africa. Wonder is also a U.N. Messenger of Peace, focusing on the rights of individuals with disabilities, committed to using his platform for social progress.
Tickets for the Stevie Wonder “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” tour in October will go on sale to the public on Friday, September 20 at 12:00 p.m.
