Southern soul and blues-rock band Alabama Shakes, led by the dynamic vocal powerhouse and guitarist Brittany Howard, has announced multiple Carolina dates as part of their expanded reunion tour. The tour kicks off in Richmond, then heads to Asheville’s ExploreAsheville.com Arena on Friday, April 17, followed by North Charleston’s High Water Festival on Saturday, April 18, before returning to North Carolina on Saturday, April 25 to perform at Raleigh’s Red Hat Amphitheater.

The Grammy Award-winning band, which emerged from Athens, Alabama in the early 2010s, earned critical acclaim with their debut album, Boys & Girls, in 2012. Soulful, gritty, and emotionally charged, with a hint of the Muscle Shoals glimmer (though recorded in Nashville), the album introduced Howard’s generational voice to the world, receiving Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Performance at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in 2013.

Their sophomore release, Sound & Color (2015), expanded into psychedelic soul and experimental southern rock, featuring hits like “Don’t Wanna Fight,” “Gimme All Your Love,” “Shoegaze,” and the title track. The album won Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song (“Don’t Wanna Fight”), and Best Alternative Album, while also earning a nomination for Album of the Year at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards in 2016.

Howard’s debut solo project, Jaime (2019), a deeply personal work dedicated to her late sister, explores themes of identity, race, grief, and resilience, featuring the standout track “Stay High.” Her follow-up solo album, What Now, was released in February 2024, and Howard has also showcased her creative range through the side projects Thunderbitch and Bermuda Triangle.

Alabama Shakes last performed in North Carolina in 2016 before taking a hiatus in 2018. The band reunited in late 2024, announcing their first tour in eight years in February, and releasing their first single in ten years, “Another Life,” in August.
