The Tony Award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo plays in Charlotte this month at Knight Theater, from April 15-27. A heartwarming coming-of-age story about a teenage girl with a rare aging condition, the show features a score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) and a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Shrek), with direction by Jessica Stone and choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen).

Celebrate the spirit of jazz at The Bill Hanna Legacy Jazz Session, every Monday night at Petra’s. A tribute to the late, great Bill Hanna, who was widely known as the godfather of Charlotte jazz. The weekly event brings together some of the city’s best musicians for a night of improvisational performances.

The hip-hop/R&B project of artist and producer Juwan Elcock, BLK ODYSSY hits Neighborhood Theatre this week. Known for fusing soul, funk, rock, and R&B, Elcock broke out with his debut project BLK VINTAGE in 2021, which was re-released through Empire in 2022 with features from Mereba, Benny the Butcher, George Clinton, and Baby Rose. His 2023 follow-up, Diamonds & Freaks, included contributions from Rapsody, Kirby, Bootsy Collins, Cory Henry, and The Alchemist. Following a 2024 NPR Tiny Desk set, he returned with 1-800-FANTASY, featuring Wiz Khalifa and Joey Bada$$. Charlotte’s own Reuben Vincent opens the show, fresh off his new mixtape H.M.W.Y.G.H! and ahead of a joint album with 9th Wonder.

Seattle soul band The Dip returns to Charlotte this week following the release of their latest album, Love Direction, released in 2024 through Dualtone. Known for their vintage sound, the band was formed in 2013 by jazz students from the University of Washington, with influences from classic Motown and Stax bands of the ’60s. Featuring a three-piece horn section, the band consists of Tom Eddy (vocals, guitar), Jarred Katz (drums), Mark Hunter (bass), Brennan Carter (trumpet), Levi Gillis (saxophone), and Evan Smith (baritone saxophone).

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Troop, a Winston-Salem, North Carolina native (Larry & Joe, Che Apalache), is preparing to debut new songs from his upcoming concept album, Whirlwind. Armed with a custom electric jazz banjo, Troop will be joined by Rebecca Kleinmann on flute, Bailey Newman on viola, Gaston Reggio on drums, and Ramon Garcia on bass. Together, they draw from a kaleidoscope of influences — ranging from Latin jazz to R&B, candombe to bluegrass, classical music to samba, and rock and roll.

Tyler Childers with opener Deer Tick at PNC Music Pavilion (7:30 p.m.)

Tyler Childers, the Kentucky-born country singer-songwriter, is set to bring his 2025 tour to Charlotte this week after postponing his North Carolina stops in Raleigh and Charlotte last week due to illness. Childers first rose to prominence in 2017 with his breakthrough album Purgatory, produced by Sturgill Simpson and David R. Ferguson (Johnny Cash, John Prine), which featured the hit song “Feathered Indians.” His 2019 follow-up, Country Squire, topped the charts and included the Grammy-nominated track “All Your’n.” His 2020 album Long Violent History addressed pressing social issues such as racism and police brutality, while his 2023 release Rustin’ in the Rain marked another milestone, including his first top 10 hit with the single “In Your Love.” Childers will be joined by Deer Tick, the Rhode Island-based alternative folk-rock band led by John McCauley. Known for songs like “Twenty Miles” and “Baltimore Blues No. 1,” Deer Tick released their latest album, Contractual Obligations, in July 2024 through ATO Records.

Charleston indie progressive rockers Five Door Sedan will play The Evening Muse in NoDa this week. The band has toured up and down the Southeast since their formation in 2023 and released their debut album, Detour, in November 2024. They also notably performed their song “Darlin’ You” for the YouTube channel Sugarshack earlier that year. Five Door Sedan will be joined by Birmingham, Alabama singer-songwriter Taylor Hollingsworth and Charlotte indie rock band Ten Til Two.

Tuck Fest, the Whitewater Center’s annual celebration of outdoor lifestyle and music, returns April 25-27 for its 12th year. The free festival (parking $12) will be headlined by St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Yola, Tanner Usrey, The Band Loula, Alex Lambert, The Last Revel, and Joslyn & The Sweet Compression. Alongside the live music, the event features races, competitions, expos, and clinics across the 1,300-acre center. New this year are the Deep Water Solo, Boatercross, and Dirty Crit competitions, with $40,000 in cash prizes. The weekend also offers daily yoga, over 60 outdoor industry vendors, and activities like trail races, kayaking, paddleboarding, rock climbing, and mountain biking.

Philadelphia folk-rockers Mt. Joy kick off the outdoor concert season at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre. Best known for their songs “Silver Lining,” “Dirty Love,” “Strangers,” and “Astrovan,” the band is gearing up to release their fourth studio album, Hope You Have Fun, in May. They’ve performed at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and the Newport Folk Festival, and have sold out iconic venues including Madison Square Garden, The Greek Theatre, and Red Rocks.

The Independent Picture House honors neo-noir filmmaker David Lynch through June, with a screening of Wild at Heart this week — his 1990 Palme d’Or-winning romantic crime drama. Based on Barry Gifford’s novel, the film follows Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) and Lula Fortune (Laura Dern), two passionate lovers on the run across the American South. Pursued by Lula’s unhinged mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd), who hires a hitman to kill Sailor, their journey spirals into a wild odyssey filled with eccentric and dangerous characters — including the unforgettable Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe).
