The Bill Hanna Legacy Jazz Session at Petra’s (7:00 p.m.)

Celebrate the spirit of jazz at The Bill Hanna Legacy Jazz Session, every Monday night at Petra’s. A tribute to the late, great Bill Hanna, who was widely known as the godfather of Charlotte jazz. The weekly event brings together some of the city’s best musicians for a night of improvisational performances.

All My Friends Are Fly is a recurring event series curated by DJ See Bird Go, featuring R&B, Amapiano, house, and hip-hop. The weekly dance party includes special guest performances and DJ sets each week.

Westside Story Baseball Tournament (Jackie Robinson Day) at Richard “Stick” Williams Dream Fields (6:00 p.m.)

To honor Jackie Robinson Day, Charlotte nonprofit the Knothole Foundation will host Westside Story (April 14-16), a free three-day event with high school baseball and softball tournaments, plus a youth clinic. Founded by former MLB players Jeff Schaefer and Morris Madden, the Knothole Foundation offers free programs for underserved youth at the Richard “Stick” Williams Dream Fields in west Charlotte. There will be a ceremonial first pitch by former Negro Leagues player Wali Cathcart, local historians showcasing baseball artifacts, and a free youth clinic on April 16 at 10 a.m.

Charlotte VegFest Jr. at Victoria Yards (5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.)

A free, family-friendly event featuring vegan food and drinks, local vendors, and a live DJ, Charlotte VegFest Jr. takes over Victoria Yards, offering a preview of the festival in October.

Kimberly Akimbo (Musical) at Knight Theater (April 15-27)

The Tony Award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo plays in Charlotte this month at Knight Theater, from April 15-27. A heartwarming coming-of-age story about a teenage girl with a rare aging condition, the show features a score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) and a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Shrek), with direction by Jessica Stone and choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen).

Blacksburg, South Carolina-born indie folk singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Thomas LaVine celebrates the release of his new EP Black Bear with a performance at The Evening Muse. Now based in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, LaVine crafts introspective songs that blend folk with an ethereal, experimental backdrop reminiscent of Bon Iver. Opening the show is Charlotte folk singer-songwriter and musician Mark Stephen Pelfrey.

Kool Keith with openers MC Homeless, DJ Halo, Geeked, The Disgusting, and Speedbag at Snug Harbor (9:00 p.m.)

Experimental hip-hop pioneer and co-founder of the legendary Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith, performs at Snug Harbor this week. Known for his numerous alter egos like Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, and Black Elvis, Kool Keith’s 1996 album Dr. Octagonecologyst is considered a classic in alternative hip-hop.

Magnolia Park, Hot Milk, Savage Hands, and South Arcade at The Underground (6:30 p.m.)

Coming off the release of their new album, When the War Is Over, released in February, husband-and-wife folk-soul duo JOHNNYSWIM bring their 2025 tour to Charlotte. They’ll be joined by up-and-coming Texas lo-fi soul singer-songwriter and musician Micah Edwards.

Celebrate two decades of empowering women student-athletes at the Judy W. Rose Let Me Play Luncheon — an annual networking and fundraising event benefiting Charlotte 49ers women’s athletics, bringing together local leaders, community members, and supporters. An inspiring afternoon spotlighting the impact of sports on education and opportunity, with featured guest speaker Shelly Cayette-Weston, President of Business Operations for Hornets Sports & Entertainment.

Soul Junction at SHOUT! with Zo! & Tall Black Guy, Howard McNair, Jason Jet, and The Bleus at Victoria Yards (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

The powerhouse musical duo of multi-instrumentalist and producer Zo! (Lorenzo Ferguson) and DJ/producer Tall Black Guy (Terrel Wallace) headline Soul Junction at Victoria Yards for SHOUT!. Zo!, best known for his work with The Foreign Exchange (North Carolina’s Phonte and Nicolay), and Tall Black Guy, who has crafted beats for the likes of Masego, Moonchild, and Skyzoo, collaborated on the 2021 album Abstractions. Jazz multi-instrumentalist Howard McNair, “electro-soul” artist and producer Jason Jet, and neo-soul/hip-hop artist The Bleus also join the bill of impressive performers for this free concert.

CineOdyssey Animation Festival (April 17-19)

The CineOdyssey Animation Festival spotlights diverse voices in animation with a full week of screenings, panels, and industry conversations across Charlotte. The festival kicks off Thursday at the Independent Picture House with Collections in Black, a documentary exploring Black comic book collectors. Friday’s highlights include The Proud Family writer/producer Calvin Brown Jr. receiving the Vanguard Award at the VAPA Center, a fireside chat with Shequeta Smith of Shero Comics at the Gantt Center, and student film screenings at the Independent. Saturday wraps up with The Matumbilas — a moving animated series about a Tanzanian family navigating life in America — followed by a collection of animated shorts and a creator talkback. Damien Escobar at Booth Playhouse (7:30 p.m.)

Award-winning violinist Damien Escobar — who became the youngest student accepted into Juilliard at just 10 years old — will grace the stage at Booth Playhouse this week. Known for blending classical, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and soul into his own genre-defying style, he’s coming off the release of his 2024 album, Gemini.

Water Tower Band with Featherpocket Stringband at The Evening Muse (7:30 p.m.)

Oceanic with openers Sophia and Bella Peadon at Visulite Theatre (8:00 p.m.)

Charlotte alternative pop band Oceanic will play a hometown show Thursday night at Visulite, joined by Winston-Salem’s Sophia and Wilmington’s Bella Peadon. Oceanic released their debut album No, Human in 2023.

Blue Velvet (Film) at The Independent Picture House (April 18-22) 

Tickets: $9.25 plus

The Independent Picture House celebrates the films of neo-noir filmmaker and artist David Lynch. This week, they’ll kick off screenings of his 1986 mystery thriller cult classic, Blue Velvet, which was shot entirely in Wilmington, North Carolina. The film earned Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and explores the dark side of suburban America. The story follows Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan), who discovers a severed ear in his small town, leading him into a twisted investigation involving a singer (Isabella Rossellini) and a criminal (Dennis Hopper). Following the 2:30 p.m. screening on Saturday, there will also be a virtual talkback with Jeff Goodwin, the makeup supervisor for the film, who created the infamous ear.

Montreal shoegaze/metal outfit Never Easy performs in Charlotte Friday night at The Evening Muse, supporting their impressive debut full-length album, it never gets easier.

Infinity’s End 420 Fest at Town Brewing Company (12 p.m. to 8 p.m.) 

Tickets: Free

Infinity’s End 420 Fest returns this weekend (Saturday, April 19) to Town Brewing Company in the FreeMoreWest neighborhood of Charlotte with a stacked lineup of live music, food trucks, games, local vendors, and national cannabis brands. The free fest features performances by Bella Moulden, Cosmic Collective, Anna Kimm, Menastree, and The Bloodworth Project. You can also enjoy retro games, tote bag painting, bong pong, resin crafts, and a Kendrick Lamar/SZA ticket giveaway. Food trucks Cutting Board CLT and Banh Mi Brothers will be serving up delicious eats alongside Town Brewing Company’s kitchen — plus, there’ll be a rolled ice cream station!

SHOUT! JazzFest at Victoria Yards (2 p.m. to 10 p.m.) 

Tickets: Free

A celebration of jazz music at Charlotte SHOUT!, hosted by Harvey Cummings, featuring performances by Braxton Bateman, Blackhawk, Pocket Scotch Band, a collaboration between Satyr Black and The Lovell Bradford Trio, and headlined by pianist Shedrick Mitchell.

Charlotte FC vs. San Diego FC at Bank of America Stadium (7:30 p.m.)

Tickets: $42 plus (Gametime)

Charlotte FC will return home to face MLS expansion team San Diego FC for the first time, under the lights at Bank of America Stadium. The Crown are coming off a 1-0 win over Montreal and are currently tied for first in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. Charlotte will look to notch their eighth consecutive regular-season home win, dating back to last year.

Carolina Ascent vs. Spokane Zephyr FC at American Legion Memorial Stadium (7:30 p.m.)

Mike with Sideshow, Niontay, and El Cousteau at The Underground (8:00 p.m.)

Indie rapper and producer MIKE headlines The Underground this weekend, following the February release of his latest album, Showbiz!. As the founder of the underground hip-hop collective sLUms, he has carved out a distinct space in the scene, operating his own record label, 10k. MIKE will be joined by labelmates Sideshow, Niontay, and El Cousteau Saturday night at The Underground.

Best known for their songs “A Toast and a Spirit” and “Careless” from their 2016 debut EP Girl, Say, Lynchburg, Virginia indie rock duo Vacation Manor will play The Music Yard in anticipation of their forthcoming project, Back To Town, set for release in May. They’ll be joined by Charlotte’s Weekend Friend, who recently released a new single, “The Edge.”
