The Outsiders, the 2023 coming-of-age musical featuring music and lyrics by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance of the folk-rock band Jamestown Revival, adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal 1967 novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film, tells the story of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma. The second stage adaptation of Hinton’s classic, the musical won four Tony Awards in 2024, including Best Musical, earned twelve Tony nominations, and its cast album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. With an original score, award-winning direction by Danya Taymor, and choreography by Rick and Jeff Kuperman, The Outsiders is a story of belonging, self-discovery, and friendship.

In Pour Taste makes its Charlotte premiere at Blume Studios, offering a unique blend of comedy and wine tasting. Comedian and former host of CBS’s The Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson will be in Charlotte at The Comedy Zone this week. Ferguson, an actor, writer, and Peabody Award winner, is also known for his role on The Drew Carey Show and for voicing characters in animated films such as How to Train Your Dragon, Winnie the Pooh, and Brave. He has written three books, including the memoirs American on Purpose and Riding the Elephant. Carolina Theatre is presenting a decades-spanning lineup of award-winning Black cinema titled the Black and Brilliant Series, kicking off with the 1971 neo-noir blaxploitation crime thriller Shaft, directed by Gordon Parks and based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel of the same name. The film helped pave the way for the genre and for strong Black leads in Hollywood, following private detective John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) as he is hired by a Harlem mobster to rescue his daughter from Italian kidnappers. The movie is also renowned for its groundbreaking soundtrack by Isaac Hayes, which won Grammys for Best Original Score and Best Instrumental Arrangement, while the “Theme from Shaft” earned the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making Hayes the first Black male to win in that category. In 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Released in 2001, the album marked Yorn’s international breakthrough, showcasing his ability to play most of the instruments himself and earning critical acclaim for its blend of folk-rock, indie, and alt-country influences. Recorded primarily in producer R. Walt Vincent’s garage after Yorn’s earlier sessions with Don Fleming, the album features standout tracks like “Strange Condition” and “For Nancy (‘Cos It Already Is),” produced with the help of Brad Wood and Ken Andrews. Yorn released his eleventh studio album, The Hard Way, in 2024.

PuppetPalooza returns to ImaginOn on Saturday for the festival’s third annual celebration of puppetry. Do The Right Thing at Carolina Theatre (7:00 p.m.)

Carolina Theatre presents a special screening of Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do the Right Thing as part of its Black & Brilliant Series. The film explores a Brooklyn neighborhood’s simmering racial tensions between Black residents and the Italian-American owners of a local pizzeria. Lee, who also stars in the film, is joined by Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, and Samuel L. Jackson, while the movie also helped launch the careers of Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez. Made on a $6.2 million budget, the film earned $37.3 million at the box office and became both a critical and commercial success, receiving numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
