CLT Asian Eats’ NC Asian Eats Restaurant Week kicks off during Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, featuring over 40 Asian-owned restaurants across Charlotte and Raleigh offering specials and discounts to highlight both new and long-standing establishments. From Korean BBQ and pho to boba and baked goods, the week celebrates the culinary diversity of the state’s growing Asian American population.

Along the way, you’ll solve puzzles, crack codes, collect properties, and try to outsmart opponents — all before time runs out. Bermuda Search Party, the genre-blurring indie pop-rock band formed at Berklee College of Music in Boston, known for their high energy and horn-driven hooks, will stop in Charlotte at Petra’s this week. Consisting of singer-songwriter and guitarist Leo Son, Claire Davis (vocals/bass), Maclin Tucker (trumpet/keys), and Hoyt Parquet (trombone), the band has built a loyal following with their live shows since graduating, having performed at festivals like Boston Calling, Levitate, SXSW, and Treefort. Joining them on the tour is Miami band Cannibal Kids, who draw inspiration from Japanese City Pop and are coming off the release of their new album, Chiral, in January.

Bronx-native jazz prodigy Samara Joy, who earned a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the age of 23, performs at the Belk Theater this week. Joy, who released her self-titled debut album in 2021, broke out with the critically acclaimed Linger Awhile in 2022 through Verve Records. A winner of the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, she became widely recognized for her interpretations of jazz standards, evoking the sound and charisma of jazz legends Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Carmen McRae, and Sarah Vaughan. Joy’s latest album, Portrait, features inventive arrangements that blend her thoughtful lyrics with the music of jazz icons Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, and her late mentor Barry Harris.

The Charlotte Checkers return home for the Atlantic Division Semifinals with a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series against the Providence Bruins. After a decisive 5-1 victory in Game 1, they secured a 2-0 shutout in Game 2 behind a stellar performance from goaltender Kaapo Kähkönen, who stopped all 32 shots he faced. The Checkers finished the regular season in second place in the Atlantic Division and last won the Calder Cup in 2018-19.

Memphis rapper Key Glock will make a special in-store appearance at Lunchbox Records in Charlotte on Thursday, May 8, at 5 p.m. Fans will be able to meet him and get a signed copy of his latest album, Glockaveli. Known for hits like “Let’s Go” and “Ambition for Cash,” Glock’s 2022 project Glockoma 2 reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Amassing a large following with YouTube covers before breaking out with his 2021 single “Cherry Wine,” which became a viral hit, he released his debut EP Demo(s) About Love in 2021, followed by Conversations with the Moon (2022) and When We Were Younger (2023). A native of Sydney, Australia, Perez won the APRA Award for Emerging Songwriter of the Year in 2024.

Charlotte’s indie rock/alt-country four-piece band will headline at Petra’s Friday night. The band, consisting of John Carstarphen (guitar,vocals), William Schoonmaker (guitar), John Muhlbach (drums), and River Dawson (bass), released their debut EP Sardine King in 2024, followed by the release of their latest singles “Lawn Chair” and “Microwave” in June. They’ll be joined by Nashville-based rock band Tobacco Road and Charlotte’s Forevergreen.

Waynesville, North Carolina-based Americana band The Brothers Gillespie will headline The Evening Muse, joined by Charlotte indie folk up-and-comer Anna Kimm. Formed in 2018, The Brothers Gillespie released their debut album, Love & Death, in 2019, followed by American Pastoral in 2022. The band consists of brothers Davis Gillespie (vocals, guitar), Aaron Gillespie (guitar), and Clay Gillespie (drums), along with Chance Kuehn (guitar) and J.R. Williams (bass), blending Americana with psychedelic rock and honky-tonk influences. Kimm, who is preparing to release her debut EP, is best known for her singles “California” and “Nothing from You Lately.”

Nelson County, Virginia-based Americana band Chamomile and Whiskey will play the River Jam at Whitewater Center on Friday night. Formed in 2011 by Koda Kerl and Marie Borgman, the band now includes Drew Kimball (guitar), Stuart Gunter (drums), and Marsh Mahon (bass). Having performed at FloydFest and touring nationally for several years, they released their third studio album, Red Clay Heart, in 2020, produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo). They’re now coming off the release of their latest recording, Put It All Together, which dropped in June.

The festival will feature live music, local artists, educational exhibits, historic reenactments, and food from local vendors.
