Superheaven, Cloud Nothing, End It, and Soul Blind at The Underground (7:00 p.m.)

Coming off their first album in a decade, Pennsylvania post-grunge outfit Superheaven will hit the road this fall, stopping in Charlotte this week with Cloud Nothings, Baltimore hardcore crew End It, and Hudson Valley alt-rockers Soul Blind. Formerly known as Daylight, Superheaven broke through with their 2013 debut Jar and the fan-favorite “Youngest Daughter,” recently revived on TikTok. Their self-titled 2025 album expands on their grunge-meets-shoegaze sound with tracks like “Long Gone,” “Cruel Times,” and “Numb to What Is Real.” Cloud Nothings, led by Dylan Baldi, rose from lo-fi roots to critical acclaim with 2012’s Attack on Memory and released their latest album, The Black Hole Understands, in July. End It, known for raw, socially charged hardcore, follow their 2022 EP Unpleasant Living with their debut LP Wrong Song of Heaven, arriving this August.

Seattle jazz drummer Kassa Overall will perform at Snug Harbor, after the release of his fourth studio album, CREAM, a collection of seven hip-hop covers. A percussion student at Oberlin Conservatory, Overall launched his career in Brooklyn, performing with jazz greats such as Christian McBride, Ravi Coltrane, and Geri Allen, and briefly playing in Jon Batiste’s Late Show band. He has also collaborated with Yoko Ono, Francis and the Lights, and Das Racist as a drummer, rapper, and producer. Known as an innovative, genre-bending jazz artist, Overall self-released his debut album Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz in 2019, followed by I Think I’m Good in 2020. He’ll be joined by Charlotte’s Bravo Pueblo, an experimental electro-pop trio featuring siblings Liza Ortiz (vocals, synth), Claudio Ortiz (bass, synth), and Lee Herrera (guitar).

FOMO, the biggest museum block party in Charlotte, is back Wednesday, taking over Levine Avenue of the Arts with free admission to Uptown museums. In partnership with the Charlotte International Arts Festival (CIAF), the evening will feature DJs, interactive art, photo ops, food trucks, and more. CIAF activations and performances at Wells Fargo Plaza run from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., including a silent disco, a sneaker and charm bar with Davita Galloway, and a headline set by King Iven accompanied by Shane Wheeler, Harvey Cummings, Dante Fowler, and JB. At the Bechtler, DJ Niyah Whya will curate the sounds, and attendees can enjoy a Polaroid decoration bar with La Bodeguita and Krishanni Smith. At The Mint, rotating Rumabo Latin dance lessons will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Genre-defying jazz quintet Butcher Brown returns to Neighborhood Theatre following the release of their latest album, Letters From The Atlantic, in March. Formed in 2009 in Richmond, Virginia, the band consists of Marcus Tenney (trumpet, saxophone), Morgan Burrs (guitar), Corey Fonville (drums), Andrew Randazzo (bass), and DJ Harrison (keyboards), blending elements of jazz, hip-hop, funk, soul, R&B, and rock. They’ll be joined by North Carolina’s own jazz fusion group Sam Fribush Organ Trio, featuring Sam Fribush, Chuck Pinckney, and Will Darity. Fribush recently joined the DTF project with musicians and composers Adam Deitch and Ari Teitel, releasing Another Side of the Sound in May.

Hornets offseason acquisition Collin Sexton will make his first public appearance at the Hornets Fan Shop in Founders Hall, where he’ll be available for photos from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Drafted eighth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers out of Alabama, Sexton was traded to Utah in 2022 and averaged 18.4 points and 4.3 assists on 48% shooting and 41% from three-point range last season. He was acquired by the Hornets along with a 2030 second-round pick in exchange for Jusuf Nurkić.

Following the release of his first full-length studio album Westward, rising Texas country singer-songwriter Dylan Gossett returns to Charlotte’s Fillmore after a sold-out show at The Underground in October. Best known for his viral hit “Coal,” Gossett’s new album explores themes of love, family, faith, life on the road, and chasing dreams, featuring standout tracks like “Sweet Lady,” “Tree Birds,” and “American Trail.” Supporting the show are Irish indie-folk-rock band Kingfishr and North Carolina country singer-songwriter James Tucker.

Pianist Arturo O’Farrill makes his Jazz Room debut with his sextet, performing Afro-Latin grooves in partnership with the Charlotte International Arts Festival for Hispanic Heritage Month. Born in Mexico and raised in New York, he is the son of Latin jazz legend Chico O’Farrill and serves as pianist, composer, and director of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. A multiple Grammy-winning artist, Arturo has collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte, and he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance to preserve and promote Afro-Latin music. O’Farrill is also Professor of Global Jazz Studies and Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UCLA. The Jazz Room offers a casual, intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of classic jazz clubs.

The Carolina Theatre, the Hispanic Heritage Festival of the Carolinas, and Progreso Hispano Media Group present a special screening of the musical drama film In The Heights, bringing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s vibrant musical to the big screen. Set in Washington Heights, the largely Dominican-American neighborhood of New York City, the story follows bodega owner Usnavi as he dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic while navigating life, love, and community. This screening is the first of several films at the Carolina Theatre celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Rising to fame in 2019 through Discord and Twitch, he built a devoted fanbase known as “amicos” with his independently released music. Known for nostalgic 2000s influences, pop-punk energy, and relatable lyrics, MICO has amassed over 100 million streams and sold-out North American and European tours, and is best known for tracks like “Cut My Hair,” “Senses,” and “HOMESICK.” Jacksonville, Florida-based indie-pop singer-songwriter Jeremiah Daly will open the show.

The Southeast Collectors Showcase at Cabarrus Arena (September 20-21)

The Southeast Collectors Showcase returns to Cabarrus Arena in Concord this weekend, bringing one of the region’s largest collectibles events to the Carolinas. The two-day convention features over 500 tables of sports cards, Pokémon, vintage toys, jerseys, and rare memorabilia, along with autograph and photo opportunities with former athletes including Lawrence Taylor, Muggsy Bogues, Kemba Walker, Doc Gooden, Rocket Ismail, Drew Pearson, Kelly Kelly, Gheorghe Mureșan, Ty Lawson, Phil Ford, and more. The Mint Museum presents Central Impact: Skateboarding’s Art and Influence, an exhibition celebrating the art, culture, and history of skateboarding. Centered on the deck as skateboarding’s iconic canvas, the show features rare boards, original artwork, and archival media spanning from the 1980s to today. Highlighting works by Sean Cliver, Marc McKee, and Andy Jenkins alongside collections from multiple archivists, the exhibition explores how graphics and skate culture have shaped generations locally and globally. Organized by Deckaid, a volunteer-run 501(c)(3), Black Sheep Skate Shop, and The Mint Museum, the exhibition supports the Charlotte Skate Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for and preserving public skateboarding facilities in the city.

A Vibe Called Fresh returns to Charlotte this Saturday at the West Complex, 1600 W. Trade St., for the premiere of Mashup Madness. The free festival offers a full day of music, art, and community, highlighted by a live three-round DJ showdown competing for the custom Mashup Madness championship belt. Attendees can enjoy skating with free rentals, food from local vendors, retail and resource booths, and live art curated by Ricky Singh. The festival features sets by DJs Buttafingaz, DJ Fannie Mae, and B-Man, and includes a special contest where two audience members compete for prizes by identifying hip-hop and R&B songs reimagined as classical piano, performed by musician Harvey Cummings.

The Mint Museum Randolph presents Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks, an exhibition that showcases how technology, inventive materials, and fresh ideas are reshaping footwear. Visitors can explore around sixty futuristic designs, including digitally created and 3D-printed shoes, sneakers made from mushroom leather and reclaimed ocean plastics, and footwear crafted for the metaverse, drawn from the Bata Shoe Museum’s collection and loans from leading designers and institutions. The exhibition also traces the evolution of shoemaking, from industrial-age limitations to today’s innovative possibilities, featuring contributions from designers and brands such as Salehe Bembury, Steven Smith, RTFKT, Nike ISPA, and Zaha Hadid.

Punk rock acts PUP and Jeff Rosenstock reunite for a co-headlining U.S. tour, bringing their high-energy performances to Charlotte this week. PUP is touring behind their new album, Who Will Look After the Dogs?, while Rosenstock recently wrote all the music and lyrics for the Craig of the Creek animated film soundtrack. This tour marks a decade since PUP and Rosenstock first toured together.

Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons at Bank of America Stadium (1:00 p.m.)

The Panthers will host the Atlanta Falcons in their home opener at Bank of America Stadium, facing a tough challenge after Atlanta’s 22-6 victory over the Vikings. Falcons running back Bijan Robinson rushed for 143 yards, with Tyler Allgeier adding 67, while Atlanta’s defense recorded six sacks and forced three turnovers. Carolina is coming off a 27-22 loss to the Cardinals, despite Bryce Young leading a second-half surge with three touchdown passes. Rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillian continued to impress with six catches for 100 yards, and Young finished with a career-high 328 passing yards on 35 of 55 completions, though he committed two early turnovers. The Panthers will also be without key linemen: Robert Hunt suffered a torn left bicep, and Austin Corbett injured the MCL in his left knee. Both players were placed on injured reserve, with Chandler Zavala stepping in for Hunt and Cade Mays taking over at center.

Ziggy Marley and Burning Spear at The Amp Ballantyne (7:00 p.m.)

Grammy-winning reggae royalty, Ziggy Marley, the eldest son of reggae icon Bob Marley and Rita Marley, will play The Amp Ballantyne on Sunday. Known for carrying forward his father’s legacy while carving his own path, Marley has earned eight Grammys and an Emmy Award, blending roots reggae with socially conscious messages and global rhythms. He will be joined by Burning Spear, a pioneering figure in the genre and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who is also a multi-Grammy Award-winning artist.

Bilmuri, the alternative rock project led by Johnny Franck, will play The Fillmore, coming off the release of their 2024 album American Motor Sport. Franck, the former vocalist and guitarist of Attack Attack!, launched the project in 2015 after leaving the band to pursue a solo path. Named after actor Bill Murray, Bilmuri has built a cult following with its blend of post-hardcore and pop-punk. They’ll be joined by Boston pop-punk trio Driveways and Nashville’s John Harvie.
