The Charlotte Hornets have announced the return of the classic 1997-2002 uniforms to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the franchise’s inaugural season. The second-generation uniforms also represent the most successful stretch in franchise history with the team reaching the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2002 under the late head coach, Paul Silas.
The most recognizable player from that era for many is probably Baron Davis who was drafted by the Hornets third overall in the 1999 NBA Draft, and selected to an All-Star team in 2002. Another memorable moment from this era was rapper Master P’s short stint with the team in 1999 when he signed a 10-day contract during training camp.
The Hornets are expected to wear the uniforms for eight home games this season to celebrate the 35th anniversary. The throwback jerseys will be available at the Hornets Fan Shop and other licensed retail outlets this fall.
Update (9/7): The Hornets have announced the schedule for the eight anniversary games in the 2023-24 season. The first will be on opening night against the Hawks and 15,000 fans will receive a free t-shirt. Baron Davis will be honored during the game against the New York Knicks on Saturday, November 18, and Gerald Wallace will be recognized when the Memphis Grizzlies come to town on Saturday, February 10. Both players will take part in special halftime ceremonies and the first 5,000 fans entering Spectrum Center will receive commemorative posters of Davis and Wallace on those days.
