The Checkers are celebrating Throwback Week wearing their old school Charlotte Clippers uniforms Saturday night against the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Clippers, the first hockey franchise to play in Charlotte after the Baltimore Clippers’ arena burned down in 1956, won two Walker Cups before being renamed the Charlotte Checkers in 1960.
The Checkers will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of Bojangles Coliseum with a special ticket package that includes a limited-edition figurine with a removable top. Originally the Charlotte Coliseum, and formerly Independence Arena (1993-2001) and Cricket Arena (2001-2008), the building was built in 1955, and has hosted some epic concerts including Jimi Hendrix, The Jackson 5, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Grateful Dead, Tina Turner, Elvis Pressley, and many more.
The figurines will be available at the merch stand, along with themed items celebrating the Charlotte Clippers and the coliseum. The game-worn Clippers jerseys will also be up for auction leading up to and during the 4 p.m. Saturday game.
The Checkers broke a three-game losing streak Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Admirals, led by Kyle Criscuolo’s two goals. The Checkers currently sit in third place in the AHL’s Atlantic Division and the Hartford Wolf Pack are currently in seventh place. The teams will face off again on Sunday at 4 p.m. for Family Night, where you can save $10 per ticket when you purchase four or more.
