The Charlotte Checkers head into their home opener this week with a 2-0 record after beating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 7-6 and the Bridgeport Islanders 3-0. Left wing Aiden McDonough has been red hot, scoring a hat trick against the Penguins, and adding another goal in the 3-0 win over the Islanders, alongside goaltender Ken Appleby’s first shutout of the season. McDonough was also named AHL Player of the Week, marking the first time a Checkers player received the honor since Owen Tippett in 2022.

The Checkers, who are the top minor league affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers, finished fourth in the Atlantic Division last season. The Cleveland Monsters, who are the top affiliate team of the Columbus Blue Jackets, led the North Division, losing in the conference finals against the eventual Calder Cup champion, Hershey Bears.
