The Hornets return home following back-to-back road wins against the Jazz and Bulls for their MLK Day game against the Dallas Mavericks. The Hornets will also celebrate second-year standout Brandon Miller with his first bobblehead giveaway (first 5,000 in attendance), along with special entertainment, programming, and local vendors to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Legendary DJ D-Nice will present a special halftime show featuring renowned saxophonist Mike Phillips, the first musician signed to Jordan Brand and the only one to record and tour with Michael Jackson, Prince, and Stevie Wonder. Grammy-nominated gospel artist Travis Greene will also perform with his Forward City band and special guests following the game.
On the court, the Hornets are coming off back-to-back wins for the first time since early November. Mark Williams is averaging 24.7 points on 69.8% shooting and 16 rebounds over his last three games. However, just as a key player returns, another one gets injured for the Hornets. The team announced on Friday night that Brandon Miller suffered a torn scapholunate ligament in his right wrist during the game against the Jazz on January 15 and will be out indefinitely. This is a huge blow for the Hornets, as Miller is the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 21 points per game.
The Mavericks have dealt with injury woes this year as well, as Luka Doncic has been out since Christmas Day with a calf strain and isn’t expected to return until sometime in February. Kyrie Irving returned Friday night from a back injury in the win against Oklahoma, scoring 25 points. The Mavericks are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference standings with a 23-19 record.
