24-year-old Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist phenom, Samara Joy, will perform in Charlotte this week at Belk Theater. The Bronx native, who has drawn comparisons to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, and released her debut self-titled album the same year. Her follow-up, Linger Awhile, released in 2022, earned her Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. In March, Joy released a new song, “Why I’m Here,” for the Netflix film, Shirley, which tells the story of the first Black U.S. congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm.
