Hiss Golden Messenger, the Durham-based indie folk group led by MC Taylor, has released a new single “I Need A Teacher” from the forthcoming album Terms of Surrender out September 20 on Merge Records.

“I Need a Teacher,” a politically-inspired folk song dedicated to North Carolina teachers, is accompanied by visuals from director D.L. Anderson, showcasing the real teachers who demonstrated against cuts to public education. “I wanted to create a portrait of the people that put their lives on the line for our kids every day. I’ve watched it many times at this point, and it makes me weep every time,” Taylor said in a tweet.

The new album Terms of Surrender was recorded at Aaron Dessner’s (The National) New York studio, and Roger Moutenot’s (Sleater-Kinney, Yo La Tengo) Haptown Studio in Nashville. It will include features from Jenny Lewis, Phil Cook, and more.

A fall tour has been announced with $1 of every ticket sold going to the Durham Public Schools Foundation.
