One of the biggest highlights from Dreamville Fest 2022 in Raleigh wasn’t a scheduled act, it was actually from a Statesville, NC native and North Carolina Central University student named Josiah Russell. Russell, who is a junior at the HBCU, was elected as Mr. NCCU for the 2022-23 academic year, and is a singer who won a recent 2021 Best of the Carolinas Gospel Competition presented by the university.

While Russell was working security at the festival, R&B star Kehlani overheard him “singing his ass off” backstage. During her performance, she paused the set to recognize Russell who sang a snippet of Musiq Soulchild’s “Love,” much to the delight of tens of thousands in attendance. The aspiring gospel singer who absolutely crushed the opportunity, recently released a single in 2021 titled, “Let Me Be Me.”
