Durham’s own Sylvan Esso have announced the release date for their third studio album, Free Love, due out September 25 on Loma Vista Recordings. Having released a stimulating hour-long concert film back in April documenting their 2019 WITH tour, the dynamic indie-pop duo have unveiled a new song and video “Ferris Wheel” from the forthcoming album.

“It’s a record about being increasingly terrified of the world around you and looking inward to remember all the times when loving other people seemed so easy, so that you can find your way back to that place,” the band communicated in a press release.

The song “Ferris Wheel” is a multi-layered synth-driven dance track that has Amelia Meath dancing in a late-night county fair setting in the video. Flutes chirp as we see a kaleidoscope of dimmed neon colors and Meath sings, “When I’m slamming in my dancing shoes / Asphalt’s hot, and my knees all bruised / It’s the summer, got a lot to prove.”

The track showcases Amelia Meath and producer Nick Sanborn’s intoxicating merger of sounds and unique chemistry. “At the heart of Sylvan Esso is this really fun argument,” said Meath. “Nick wants things to sound unsettling, but I want you to take your shirt off and dance. We’re trying to make pop songs that aren’t on the radio, because they’re too weird. It’s a pop band, but we’re talking about complicated emotions.”

Free Love follows 2017’s release What Now with 10 tracks including the two singles recently released, “What If” and “Ferris Wheel.”
