Immediate Family at Booth Playhouse (July 29-August 31)

Blumenthal Arts presents the regional premiere of Immediate Family, a bold and timely new play written by Hamilton alum Paul Oakley Stovall and directed by Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad. Set on Chicago’s South Side, Immediate Family follows the Bryant family as they reunite for a wedding — only to have their carefully curated image disrupted when the middle son unexpectedly brings his Swedish boyfriend. What unfolds is a funny, heartfelt, and unflinchingly honest portrait of a modern family navigating love, loyalty, and generational change. Described as Modern Family meets Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, the play tackles themes of race, sexuality, identity, and tradition through the lens of an African American family grappling with the evolving values of the 21st century.

Big Brain is a bold new Afrosurrealist scripted series created by Charlotte artists Arial Robinson and Krishanni Smith, following two emerging creatives as they navigate identity, adversity, and artistic purpose in the wake of community budget cuts. Set in Charlotte, the series blends surrealism with social commentary to spotlight the power of creativity in uncertain times. The screening will be followed by a group discussion led by the creators.

Pleasure House and Somnium at Snug Harbor (9:00 p.m.)

Charlotte indie garage rockers Pleasure House kick off their August residency at Snug Harbor this week alongside math rock band Somnium. Formed in 2021, Pleasure House features dual guitars from Travis Phillips and Joe Boyland, complemented by Tom Cushing on synths, Alexander Hanifin on bass, and Ian Pasquini on drums. The band released their self-titled debut EP in 2022 and followed it up with their latest single, “I Was a Boy,” in March. Somnium dropped a new track, “8-Bit Ocean,” in July, featuring Tyler Enslow of Cosmic Collective and John Benoit of Florida post-hardcore band Resilia.

The Carolina Theatre continues its summer “Lost Years” film series with the 1987 action-comedy sequel Beverly Hills Cop II, a movie that cemented Eddie Murphy’s status as a global star. In the film, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Murphy) heads back to Beverly Hills to assist his friends and fellow officers in solving a series of violent crimes linked to a ruthless counterfeit money operation. With the help of his partners, Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Serge (John Ashton), Axel combines street-smart tactics with sharp wit to crack the case, taking on dangerous criminals while delivering plenty of laughs and high-octane action.

Mo’ Betta Thursdays is a weekly jazz event hosted by Braxton Bateman in collaboration with A-part[meant] — a Charlotte boutique spotlighting contemporary womenswear, accessories, and local artwork. Held in the heart of NoDa at the market/bar The Exchange at 36th, the event brings together some of Charlotte’s top musicians for an evening of jazz, R&B, soul, and hip-hop improvisation.

Charley Crockett Performance, Signing, and Meet-and-Greet at Lunchbox Records (5:00 p.m.)

Texas country/soul singer-songwriter Charley Crockett will be at Lunchbox Records on Friday for a special in-store performance, signing, and meet-and-greet to celebrate his new album Dollar A Day. Capacity is limited, but you can preorder the album (out Friday) or stop by Lunchbox to purchase it and gain entry. They’ll add you to the list and give you a wristband for the in-store performance.

Carolina Panthers vs. Cleveland Browns at Bank of America Stadium (7:00 p.m.)

Tickets: $11.90 plus

The Panthers kick off their preseason this week against the Cleveland Browns, giving fans their first live look at new free-agent acquisitions and rookies in game action. Starters are expected to play a few series, while rookies like Tetairoa McMillan, Nic Scourton, Princely Umanmielen, and Jimmy Horn Jr. will have a chance to showcase their skills in front of the fans. It will also be the first look at the Browns’ intriguing quarterback battle, with veteran Joe Flacco — likely their Week 1 starter — competing against Shedeur Sanders, Kenny Pickett, and Dylan Gabriel. According to multiple reports, Sanders will get the start due to hamstring injuries for both Pickett and Gabriel.

Five-time Grammy Award winner and original Dungeon Family member CeeLo Green joins renowned Charlotte saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield (Prince, Lionel Richie) for an evening of soul, funk, jazz, and R&B at the historic Carolina Theatre. Presented by Jazz N Soul Music, Green — best known for his work with producer Danger Mouse as part of the duo Gnarls Barkley — will take the stage alongside Crutchfield’s saxophone mastery for a concert filled with hits, improvisation, and top-tier musicianship.
