Tuesday, May 27

Shucked (Musical) at Belk Theater (May 27 – June 1)

The Tony Award-winning musical Shucked opens in Charlotte this week at Belk Theater. With a witty book by Robert Horn (Tootsie), a charming country score by Grammy winners Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally (Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow”), and direction by Broadway legend Jack O’Brien (Hairspray), Shucked is a feel-good musical bursting with humor, heart, and hometown spirit. Set in the quirky, close-knit town of Cob County — where corn is life — trouble begins when the crops suddenly stop growing. Faced with a mysterious blight threatening their livelihood, the townsfolk turn to an unlikely hero, Maizy, who ventures beyond the county line for help.

The Royal Tenenbaums at Independent Picture House (May 27-28)

Ahead of the release of Wes Anderson’s new film The Phoenician Scheme, The Independent Picture House presents a mini-series celebrating some of his previous works: Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. This week, they revisit The Royal Tenenbaums, a dark comedy about a dysfunctional family of former prodigies now adrift in adulthood. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman), the estranged patriarch, fakes a terminal illness to reunite with his troubled children — Chas (Ben Stiller), Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Richie (Luke Wilson) — in a story about failure, forgiveness, and the enduring bonds of a brilliantly quirky family.

SiR with opener Isaiah Falls at The Fillmore (8:00 p.m.)

Top Dawg Entertainment R&B/soul artist SiR will bring his spring/summer tour to North Carolina this week with stops in Charlotte (The Fillmore) on May 28 and Raleigh (The Ritz) on May 29. A native of Inglewood, California, SiR began his career working behind the scenes with legends like Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, and Jill Scott, before stepping into the spotlight with his 2015 debut Seven Sundays. Signing to TDE in 2017, he gained widespread attention with his third album Chasing Summer, featuring the single “Hair Down” with Kendrick Lamar. SiR’s latest release, Heavy (2024), features contributions from Isaiah Rashad, Ty Dolla $ign, Anderson .Paak, and Ab-Soul.

Halsey, Alvvays, and Hope Tala at PNC Music Pavilion (7:00 p.m.)

Pop star Halsey brings her nationwide tour to Charlotte this week, joined by Canadian dream-pop band Alvvays and British R&B artist Hope Tala. Halsey’s latest album, The Great Impersonator, is her most personal and sonically diverse project to date, created alongside producers like Alex G and Michael Uzowuru. Alvvays, known for indie rock staples like “Archie, Marry Me” and “Dreams Tonite,” returned from a long hiatus with 2022’s acclaimed Blue Rev and last performed in Charlotte at The Underground in May 2024. Opening the show is rising British R&B artist Hope Tala, best known for tracks like “Lovestained” and “All My Girls Like to Fight.”

In recognition of AAPI Heritage Month and Small Business Month, several local nonprofit organizations are coming together to host a special Friends in Business EXPO at the VAPA Center — a full day dedicated to networking, learning, and community engagement. The event will unite small businesses, nonprofits, and corporations, offering a meaningful opportunity to foster new connections and support local growth. Attendees will have the chance to explore a vibrant exhibit hall showcasing local products, services, and food, while participating in hands-on workshops and breakout sessions centered on business development, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

Mo’ Betta Thursdays is a weekly jazz event hosted by Braxton Bateman in collaboration with A-part[meant] — a boutique spotlighting contemporary womenswear, accessories, and local artwork. Held at The Exchange at 36th, the event brings together some of Charlotte’s top musicians for an evening of blues, funk, jazz, and soulful improvisation.

The Soul Rebels at Neighborhood Theatre (8:00 p.m.)

The dynamic New Orleans-based brass band The Soul Rebels — known for their electrifying blend of jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, and rock — perform at Charlotte’s Neighborhood Theatre this week. Formed in the early ’90s, the group is renowned for its innovative horn arrangements and genre-defying collaborations with artists like Trombone Shorty, Nas, Green Day, Rakim, GZA, and Big Freedia. Deeply rooted in New Orleans’ rich musical heritage, The Soul Rebels bring a fresh, modern twist to traditional brass band sounds.

Memphis rapper Key Glock headlines The Fillmore this week following the release of his latest album, Glockaveli. The 18-track project showcases Glock’s steady Memphis flow and hard-hitting trap beats, with no guest appearances or features. He’ll be joined by Sheck Wes of “Mo Bamba” fame, Atlanta rapper Karrahbooo of Lil Yachty’s Concrete Boys collective, and fellow Memphis rappers Zo Trapalot and PaperRoute Woo.

The Jazz Room Presents: Emmet Cohen Trio at Stage Door Theater (May 3031)

Harlem-based jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen returns to Charlotte for JazzArts Charlotte’s Jazz Room. Winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards and a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk Competition, Cohen regularly headlines top venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Village Vanguard, and has performed at prestigious jazz festivals worldwide. His acclaimed albums such as Future Stride (2021) and Uptown in Orbit (2022), showcase his ability to masterfully blend old-school and modern styles. During the pandemic, he launched Live from Emmet’s Place, a weekly livestream concert from his apartment that became a global jazz phenomenon, featuring guests ranging from legends like Houston Person to rising stars like Samara Joy. He also founded the Master Legacy Series — a project focused on intergenerational collaboration with jazz greats such as Jimmy Cobb, Benny Golson, and Houston Person — preserving and sharing jazz’s oral history and cultural legacy. Cohen released his latest album, Vibe Provider, through Mack Avenue Records in August 2024.

Metallica, Pantera, and Suicidal Tendencies at Bank of America Stadium (6:00 p.m.)

Metallica brings their M72 World Tour to Charlotte this week with a long-awaited performance at Bank of America Stadium — their first in the city since 2018. The legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be joined by Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies. Formed in the early ’80s by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Metallica helped shape the sound of modern metal with landmark albums like Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. With over 125 million albums sold and nine Grammy Awards, the band remains one of the most influential acts in rock history. Leading up to the show, fans can take part in several official Metallica events on Friday, May 30, including a sneak peek screening of Metallica Saved My Life at AMC Carolina Pavilion 22, a volunteer opportunity at Second Harvest of Metrolina, a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross at Bank of America Stadium, and the Blackened x Drew Estate tasting event with Rob Dietrich at Suffolk Punch Brewing with cigars, whiskey, and craft beer.

Aviation City Exhibit Opening at Sullenberger Aviation Museum (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

This week, the Sullenberger Aviation Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, is unveiling its new exhibit, Aviation City. Set inside a beautifully restored 1936 hangar, the exhibit highlights the vital role aviation has played in Charlotte’s economic and social development. As the museum’s third themed exhibit, Aviation City offers visitors an immersive experience featuring an impressive collection of aircraft, including a Piedmont Airlines Douglas DC-3, a Stearman biplane, a Republic F-84 Thunderjet, a Bellanca 14-9 Cruisair, and a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star. Two interactive flight simulators, one wheelchair-accessible, provide a hands-on and inclusive experience. Museum President Stephen Saucier calls the exhibit a tribute to innovation and a celebration of Charlotte’s rich aviation heritage.

Celebrate 25 years of Charlotte’s underground label, 10 Millimeter Omega Records, with an all-day event at Starlight on 22nd featuring live performances, art, and an eclectic lineup of DJs. Enjoy intimate sets by Benji Hughes, indie rock band Wilde Green, dreampop outfit The Mystery Plan, and singer-songwriter Ania, along with DJ sets from That Guy Smitty, Dirty Drummer (Dave Haire), The Mighty DR, and Jah Freedom.

Charlotte Checkers vs. Laval Rocket (Game 3 AHL Eastern Conference Finals) at Bojangles Coliseum (4:00 p.m.)

The Charlotte Checkers are set to take on the Laval Rocket in the Eastern Conference Finals, with the best-of-seven series beginning on the road before shifting to Bojangles Coliseum for Games 3, 4, and 5 if necessary. Charlotte enters the matchup riding high after a commanding sweep of the defending champion Hershey Bears in the Atlantic Division Finals. Laval punched its ticket with a dominant 5-0 win over Rochester in Game 5 of the North Division Finals and comes in as the AHL’s regular-season leader with a 48-19-5 record. The Rocket, affiliates of the Montreal Canadiens, face a Checkers squad that finished second in the Atlantic Division and has surged through Providence and Hershey behind standout playoff performances from Wilmer Skoog, Ben Steeves, and goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen, who holds a 1.68 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.

Join authors Tom Hanchett and John Cleghorn for a drop-in event at Park Road Books celebrating their new books, Affordable Housing in Charlotte and Building Belonging. The authors will offer readings at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., followed by discussions on the challenges and successes of affordable housing locally and nationally. Topics include what “affordable” really means, who qualifies, how housing is funded, and why shortages persist. A noted community historian, Tom Hanchett, specialized in Charlotte’s neighborhoods and is the author of Sorting Out the New South City. John Cleghorn, pastor of Caldwell Presbyterian since 2008, is a leading voice in the church’s movement to create affordable housing, with a background in journalism and banking.
