Blumenthal Arts presents the regional premiere of Immediate Family, a bold and timely new play written by Hamilton alum Paul Oakley Stovall and directed by Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad. Set on Chicago’s South Side, Immediate Family follows the Bryant family as they reunite for a wedding — only to have their carefully curated image disrupted when the middle son unexpectedly brings his Swedish boyfriend. What unfolds is a funny, heartfelt, and unflinchingly honest portrait of a modern family navigating love, loyalty, and generational change. Described as Modern Family meets Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, the play tackles themes of race, sexuality, identity, and tradition through the lens of an African American family grappling with the evolving values of the 21st century.

Punk legends the Descendents bring their 2025 U.S. tour to Charlotte this week, returning to the Queen City for the first time since 2021. Known for their seminal 1982 debut Milo Goes to College and frontman Milo Aukerman’s iconic nerd-punk persona, the California pioneers remain one of the genre’s most influential forces. Joining them are D.C. garage punk duo Teen Mortgage and Michigan indie outfit Liquid Mike. Fans can expect a high-energy, career-spanning set from a band that helped shape modern punk.

Charlotte Knights vs. Rochester Red Wings at Truist Field (7:04 p.m.)

The Charlotte Knights host the Rochester Red Wings for a six-game series at Truist Field. Highlights include $4 taquitos and $8 tallboys on Tuesday, Bark in the Ballpark on Wednesday, and Thirsty Thursday featuring $2 hot dogs and 1993 championship throwback giveaways. Friday offers fireworks and Harry Potter Night, while Saturday’s game will help raise funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The week concludes with Family Funday on Sunday, where kids can run the bases. The Knights enter the series in seventh place in the International League standings, while the Rochester Red Wings sit in last. Charlotte outfielder Will Robertson was named International League Player of the Week for July 22-27. Charlotte FC begins its 2025 Leagues Cup run with a home game against FC Juárez on Thursday night. The match kicks off a trio of high-profile LIGA MX showdowns at Bank of America Stadium, with Charlotte also hosting C.D. Guadalajara on Sunday and C.F. Monterrey on August 7. The 2025 Leagues Cup features a new format, bringing together 36 teams — 18 from Major League Soccer and 18 from LIGA MX — in interleague group-stage play. The top four teams from each league will advance to the knockout rounds, with the finalists and third-place team earning spots in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. Charlotte FC enters the tournament riding a wave of momentum, having won four straight MLS games for the first time in club history. FC Juárez, known as “Los Bravos,” will be a tough opponent looking to make an impact in this cross-league competition.

Held in the heart of NoDa at the market/bar The Exchange at 36th, the event brings together some of Charlotte’s top musicians for an evening of jazz, R&B, soul, and hip-hop improvisation.

Vince Gill, the 22-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist, will take the stage at Ovens Auditorium this week. Widely regarded as one of modern country music’s most accomplished and beloved artists, Gill first rose to fame with his 1990 hit “When I Call Your Name,” which earned CMA Single and Song of the Year honors, along with a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance. A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1991 and an inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Gill has sold more than 30 million albums. In addition to his prolific solo career, he has performed with acts like Pure Prairie League, The Notorious Cherry Bombs, and The Time Jumpers. Since 2017, he’s also toured with the Eagles, lending his talents to one of rock’s most iconic bands.

MAYA VP Studios, Charlotte’s first virtual production studio, will host its grand opening on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony presented by the Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the City of Charlotte. Guests can experience a live demonstration of the cutting-edge virtual production setup, complemented by drinks from Justin Hazleton of Lorem Ipsum, curated wines from Joshua Villapando of Assorted Table Wine Shoppe, hors d’oeuvres by Saku, beer from Sugar Creek Brewing, and music from DJ That Guy Smitty.

His work explores themes of identity, place, and the human experience. Best known for his song “Van Gogh,” he released his latest acclaimed album, Thus Spoke the Fool, in August 2024.

Panthers Fan Fest at Bank of America Stadium (6:30 p.m.)

Panthers Fan Fest returns to Charlotte this weekend after celebrating its 30th anniversary in Clemson last season. With training camp closed to the public this year, many fans will get their first in-person look at rookies like Tetairoa McMillan, Nic Scourton, Trevor Etienne, and more. Gates open at 5 p.m. for an evening featuring a full practice session, autograph opportunities, and capped off by one of the region’s biggest fireworks and laser shows. There will also be appearances and performances by Sir Purr, the TopCats, PurrCussion, and the Black & Blue Crew. The first 5,000 attendees will receive roster flip cards, and kids can enjoy bubbles and the coloring wall at the Atrium Health Kids Zone.

Durham’s lo-fi alternative rockers Dirty Flowers released their debut studio album, What Illusions, in 2022. They’ll be joined by beloved Charlotte folk duo Sinners & Saints, consisting of Perry Fowler and Mark Baran.
