The two top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference (No. 8 SMU and No. 17 Clemson) will face off for the 2024 ACC Football Championship in Charlotte Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium, airing on ABC.
The SMU Mustangs, who are the first football team to reach the ACC title game in their debut season in the conference, boasts an 11-1 record going 8-0 in ACC play. Clemson is making its 10th appearance in the conference championship game (the most in ACC history), although their path has been a little less dominant this year, suffering three losses, including South Carolina and Georgia– the only two ranked teams on their schedule.
Clemson’s offense, led by quarterback Cade Klubnik and running back Phil Mafah, has struggled against top competition, managing just 17 total points in those two games against Georgia and South Carolina. SMU’s offense, led by senior running back Brashard Smith, averages 39 points per game with a defense that held Virginia and California to a combined 13 points in their last two games.
The matchup will determine the conference’s automatic bid into the College Football Playoff in its inaugural 12-team format. Clemson must win to secure its place in the playoff, while SMU could position the ACC as a one-bid conference in the national title race with a victory.
