Winston-Salem, North Carolina native Ben Folds returns to Charlotte this week for his Paper Airplane Request Tour, encouraging fans to send song requests to the stage with paper airplanes. The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist first gained widespread recognition in the ’90s as the frontman and pianist of the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five. The band’s sound, characterized by Folds’ piano-driven melodies and witty, introspective lyrics, quickly garnered a dedicated following.
After the band’s initial breakup in 2000, Folds embarked on a successful solo career, releasing Rockin’ the Suburbs in 2001 and Songs for Silverman in 2005. Folds has also explored classical music, composing and performing with major symphony orchestras around the world and serving as the first artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center since 2017.
He released his fifth solo studio album, What Matters Most, in June 2023 through New West Records, covering a range of themes including love, loss, reflection, and societal observations. The arrangements feature his patented piano work, complemented by orchestral elements and subtle electronic notes.
Actor, writer, pianist, and songwriter Lindsey Kraft will open the show with her theatrical pop stylings including songs from her autobiographical musical, love, me.
