The Black Notes Project is an annual event with a mission to celebrate and amplify Black music and artistry through a diverse schedule of programming. Produced by Sol Kitchen in collaboration with Blumenthal Performing Arts, the festival combines classical orchestral traditions with contemporary genres, such as jazz, rap, big band, hip-hop, and opera.
The second annual installment of the festival will feature two evening concerts and a family-friendly show featuring the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra. This year’s theme is jazz and will feature headlining performances by the Niels Lan Doky Experience, Trap Jazz, and Charlotte’s Sainted Trap Choir.
On Saturday night, Trap Jazz, the brainchild of Atlanta music director and arranger Chris Moten, will perform alongside Sainted Trap Choir to pay tribute to legends Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Since their debut performance in 2016, Trap Jazz has shared stages with esteemed musicians such as Terrace Martin, Christian Scott, Ghost-Note, Jacob Collier, and others.
Founded in 2020 by DJ Fannie Mae and musician Dennis Reed Jr., Sainted Trap Choir is a musical ensemble that blends gospel traditions with contemporary hip-hop. Best known for their appearances on America’s Got Talent, they have performed with Andra Day, Fantasia, and Sara Bareilles.
